Kinja'd!!!

I’m stoked about luscious grand touring coupes coming back! The Lexus LC is already out and geared up for a real “F” model. Then we have an Aston Martin DB11 with an AMG V8 on the way, a new Bentley Continental GT, new Maserati Granturismo, the return of the BMW 8-Series, and the beginning of the Audi A9 lineup. Who knew Mercedes had a gap above the E-Class Coupe, right between the SL, AMG GT, and S Coupé? Apparently everyone!

Mmm, I swear it’s like automakers read my diary. High Performance Utility Vehicles (HPUV), Four Door Liftbacks, Grand Touring Coupes, and if Track Wagons become a thing then I’m starting an automotive church with car jack and lockers!

I still think Buick should make the Avista. The modernised 1970s land yacht we all need.

GT coupes are my favoritest things on the road, but this still doesn’t bring back the attainable versions like there used to be. We need a spiritual successor to the Toronado and Riviera.

Might as well, we don’t have a CTS Coupe anymore and the ATS Coupe is always a surprise to see. Twin-turbo V6 Buick Avista would be perfect, especially in Avenir trim.

Apparently only rich people can still justify coupes because the only coupes for regular people anymore are muscle cars and the rest of everyone is being absorbed by the crossover phalanx.

Am I pleased about my favorite automotive segment getting more and more cars to find used in 20 years heavily depreciated and slightly broken?

Yes.

Yes I am.

Pretty much. But it’s a poor substitute for a personal luxury coupe. They’re comfortable enough, but it’s not the same.

If they were any more like the old school coupes though they would be too big and terrible handlers. Maybe the Challenger is the last of the breed? Attainable luxury cars back then were not incredibly luxurious, but probably a little less plasticky than a challenger...

They weren’t up to today’s materials and features standards, of course, but they did have some tricks up their sleeve compared to the more proletarian offerings.

Case in point is the Olds Trofeo. It was comfortable and even luxurious by the standard of the time. Good to drive, and not very boat like at all. It also had an optional touch screen computer if you went for that sort of thing. My dad’s did not. It still had a trick computer.

My Riviera, however, was a little more unwieldy to drive, even though it was on the same platform as the Trofeo, I believe. Fit and finish sure could have been better, but you did feel you were sitting in something above the average Century. And boy could those things deliver you in comfort after a long road trip.

Rivieras are sweet, I havent driven a true comfort first crusier as a daily ever. The 1998 gs300 was close though.
