the 5 only has support for limited CDMA functionality and no band 13 LTE. Verizon users get stiffed again. I’m currently on AT&T (went there to keep using Windows Phone with the Lumia 950xl), but my the new house has total shit AT&T service (1 bar of “4g” if you stand on the back deck) and very good Verizon service (4 bars of real LTE)... Frankly I’m just about fed up enough with AT&T’s half-assed coverage in Vermont to surrender my flagship Windows Phone device to either go back to my Lumia Icon, or get a wussy Lumia 735... And then I see new OnePlus phone!!! Woot! Outsider-Android I can get behind with sexxy hardware and a nice price! Yes please!!!

nope. Fucked again :P goddamnit why does the Giant Red Evil have to have such good coverage in this state and everyone else be so shitty :/

Today I was out for a walk and I couldnt even get enough speed off my AT&T LTE to listen to a podcast.

Finding good coverage in VT is a pain. Im lucky to be in Burlington where most carriers have coverage but once you get out of the city it’s pretty hit and miss.

I’ve lived here all my life and I had Verizon for 18 years before Microsoft and BigRed had thier falling out... After I had already fallen in love with Windows Phone... AT&T is plain crap outside of the Burlington Metro Area, major ski areas, I89, I91, and rt 7 corridors...

Speaking of OnePlus. I went on their site today to pick up a 3T only to find it effectively doesn’t exist anymore and that the 5 is out in a week’s time. So off to Youtube I went to find reviews which had all luckily just had their embargoes lifted and to be honest I wasn’t blown away especially at £449 BUT

6 Hours screen on time. 6 HOURS!

So now I’m juggling whether or not 1080p, no OIS, no IPA and no front facing speakers are worthwhile compromises for 6 hours of screen on time because for all the muff they make about dash charging, you can’t replace long lasting battery life.

AT&T gave me a microcell when I lived in a bad service spot. They wanted to charge for it but I convinced them it should be free and so they gave me one.

As for 1+, I’m upset with them. 3 month old phone has a known hardware issue (camera focus) and they won’t replace it. So I have to buy another phone so I can send this one in for up to a few weeks (on my dime no less) instead of them just sending me another and taking this one back. Every phone mfr. I’ve ever had has always sent replacements when hardware issues arose under warranty. It’s bad business considering the importance of these devices...especially since I need it for work. Not just communications but I invoice on it as well. Hard resets are a PITA, especially setting up Printhand as it never works on the first few trys.

that’s a bummer to hear about OnePlus’s customer support :/ not that I’m getting one anyway... The property is 62 acres, can a Microcell cover 62 acres?

AT&T coverage is mostly fine in the city of Madison but Verizon is much better in other parts of WI and in buildings in town, so I’m on Verizon (thru Total Wireless).

My Moto X Pure Edition from a couple years ago is still holding up nicely although it’s taking forever to be updated to Nougat. It’s essentially pure stock Marshmallow and I have no complaints with it. Just got a Moto G5 Plus for my wife that also is nice but not a flagship phone.

At some point I’ll have to worry about what my next phone will be and I really do like the 5.7” screen on my current one so we’ll see how that shakes out with trying to find something both similarly large and also Verizon-compatible.

T-Mobile is supposedly expanding their network a ton in WI during 2017 so they may become a viable choice for me. They’re a little sneaky with their coverage map, if you go to T-Mobile.com and pull up coverage you get this one which includes everything they’re building through the end of 2017. You have to click on View LTE Growth and move the slider back to 2016 to see where they were at for the beginning of the year.

Whereas if you google “t-mobile coverage map” you get this one , which on first glance looks like loads of coverage, but if you zoom in you’ll see it includes lots of voice/text/non-LTE data coverage, like this:

Heh. I went to T-Mobile after I got tired of CDMA networks not getting good phones. AT&T is now a viable option now that they don’t do contracts, but I decided to stick to T-Mobile due to their sweet international roaming.

Honestly, I’m glad I did. I’m rocking an unlocked Xperia Z3 (recently cracked the back ;_; ) and the T-Mo version evidently never got Android 6. Hell, Verizon Z3Vs aren’t even proper Z3s.

Oh well. Now I have the freedom to get my sweet new Xperia XZ Premium.

It may be worth it to go back to Verizon with an Android phone. Microsoft has basically given up on Windows Phone at this point.

well, the performance dive is Android Standard Procedure, unless you do regular cleanouts... The battery thing is annoying, but sadly not unique to Samsung... Thankfully my 950xl has a replaceable battery, so when it started getting weak this spring I was able to just pick up another and slap it in... Too bad UbuntuPhone is pretty much dead/has lame GSM-only hardware support

Bruh, Google Fi Doesn’t Verizon.

(see previous posts: AT&T sucks in vermont outside of Burlington Metro Area, Major Ski Resorts, The Interstate 89 and 91 Corridors, and the US Rt7 Corridor.)

T-Mobil has almost no native towers in Vermont and roams on AT&T, Sprint has a bunch of LTE in Vermont, but mostly roams on Verizon CDMA, US Cellular roams on Verizon CDMA and LTE in Vermont. Who does Google Fi use? T-Mobil, Sprint as “home” network, and AT&T as roaming.

Vermont sucks except for Verizon (and by extension US Cellular/Verizon MVNOs) It is somewhat unclear about weather Fi will operate on Verizon Towers that are US Cellular Roaming...

Google Fi map shows 2g and 3g only at our location, roaming on Verizon CDMA... it apparently will not use Verizon LTE.

It’s been 7 years so I don’t quite recall exactly how they do so...but you connect it to your router at home. What happens from there is where I’m fuzzy. It did work quite well for me and I was in a dead spot that’s been there since AT&T was Cingular.

the Samsungs *DO* have more bloatware, but in my experience even Cyanogen gets logey after a while unless you do regular in-place reinstalls and flush all the caches... maybe that’s gotten better since Cyanogen went away and I stopped even flirting with Android...

I know, totally unreasonable, right? we might give a booster a try and see if it makes us happy or not... We also need to get a phone with a t-mobile SIM up there, because there’s a chance there’s actually t-mo LTE there...
