Are You/Have You Been Nuts About Your Vehicle?

Smallbear’s post about “Same Vehicle Syndrome” got me thinking. I will let people drive my S3, and ride the Grom. Those people might even be co workers, not even close friends or family. I’m not thrilled about lending out the Ranger, but that usually works it self out because it’s a manual.

Kinja'd!!!

On the other hand, one of my friends once put a cup of coffee on the hood of my E46M3 and I remember thinking...

Kinja'd!!!

I mentioned to smallbear that I don’t even like talking about the M3 outside of Oppo. So are any Oppos over the top nuts about a car, bike, boat, etc?

Yes. It’s why I only drive old cars with meh paint. I freak out constantly if I own something nice and new.

I wouldn’t say nuts, but I will drive around for hours until I can find a parking spot with a camera on it.

That is a great point. Some of my most peaceful days as a car owner were in a beat 96 explorer.

I have a 2005 Pathfinder that I’ve lent out to various people, at least one of whom I didn’t particularly trust — rightfully so, he got a red light camera ticket with it, towing a motorcycle behind it. I have a 2015 Lexus that my wife drives now and then, and I’d also lend it to just about anyone.

But my old E46 convertible? I’ve had it for 17 years and 107k miles - none of my friends/family has ever driven it for even a block. It’s not really because I’m that protective of it - it’s not worth much. It’s that 3rd pedal that keeps people away. And I’m trying to see how long I can get the original clutch to last, maybe?

What a fucker! Did he at least own up to the ticket?

Last time I had my E46 at my inde shop they were replacing the clutch on somone else’s E46 at the owners request. The car was over 150k and the mechanic that pulled the clutch said that it definitely did not need to be replaced!

No one drives my MJ. Seriously. I’ve had it for five years and can count on one hand the number of other people who’ve been behind the wheel. Three of them were at shops. One it wasn’t running and I was just moving it around the yard and needed someone to steer.

The Mustang and 911 are whole cashews to me: my favorite legumes. Only myself and my dad, my uncle if he ever visits our house, and shops/dealers are allowed to drive them. With the ST and 944, I was more laid back and even taught some friends how to drive stick with both of them. They were like a mix of wholes and halves. It’s all about trust and faith for me.

Though I admit whenever my dad mentions my cars to other people....I don’t like talking about them much unless it’s with car people. But I’m working on being more open about them because it’s a passion and shouldn’t be embarrassing or awkward.

He did own up to it - but tried to give me some excuse about how he didn’t think he could stop with the trailer and wanted to fight it based on that. As if the judge would find that an acceptable reason to run a red light, in broad daylight, on a dry road. He wanted to fight it based on that and I absolutely refused - then he paid it. Nice guy, but a little goofy.

Mine seems to be as good as new currently, despite a lot of stop and go traffic - I imagine it should be good for 150-200k. Having that little 2.5 I6 helps it from getting overloaded.

My F355 is paint-corrected and ceramic coated. I ask my wife and my son not to even touch the paint—she has a hard time believing how sensitive a perfect surface is to scratching, even from seemingly soft and innocent items like clothing.

When the in-laws are visiting, I ask them to disembark outside the garage, before I move the car in next to the Ferrari.

Anyone who has a personal relationship with me can ride in my car, but no drinks except bottled water. The car has no cupholders.

I use my Camry when I’m visiting LA or wheeling through the Mojave. The struts are leaking, the coolant needs to be replaced, and it’s wearing quite a few battle scars. It spends days at a time baking in the desert sun.

Meanwhile, I freak out when I can’t blow off a bit of dust/dirt on my Miata’s paint. I didn’t even tell my coworkers about the car for a full two weeks.

I love it! Corrected paint almost invites touching, it just looks so good ya wanna go swimming in it or something! Doubly so on a red Ferrari.

I removed the cup holders from the M3 and installed “euro trays” for the same reason.

If I trust that the person can adequately drive stick, I’ll gladly have them take my E46 M3 for a ride with me in it. I feel like having others drive the car will help them understand why I would spend money on a 15 year old German car that’s expensive to maintain. I think I’ve had more people drive my M3 than I have had drive my Passat.

Even though my paint sucks and my car is cheap and its super easy to drive, I still get nutty about anything involving it. Mostly its the mechanical woes that keep me up at night. What was that sound? Why did that smell off today? Something felt slightly different than usual over that bump, did I break something?

But when I get to a nice back road or on the autox course, I have found my zen again and become worry free until the next unsettling sight/sound/smell/premonition

I’ve had my S600 for two years now, and I’ve only ever let one person other than myself drive it, that person being my father. Also, it does not move from its parking space until it’s up to operating temperature. It doesn’t get driven in the rain if at all possible and it’s a garage queen for most of the winter.

The only car I owned that I was obnoxious over was my BRZ. I don’t know why, maybe because it was the only actual new car I’d ever bought myself. I coached my wife on how to close the doors without leaving fingerprints, had a strict no food policy in it, actively avoided driving it in the rain, etc.

Now that I’ve traded it in on the S3, I don’t feel any of that anxiety anymore at all. The S3 is used - it isn’t perfect, so I don’t think I care as obsessively. Like you, I’ll probably let anybody drive it who wants to - only caveat being they don’t use launch control.

I bought mine to drive it and it has a few poorly repaired paint chips from the previous owner(s), the wheels are starting to peel and corrode, and a scuff in the bumper. I still treat it very well, but it’s nice having the imperfections so I don’t freak out about anything new.

On an unrelated note, new Bilstein B12 Pro kit is on it’s way for it!

So far only the wife has driven the Eagle, and that’s only because she’s been in it, and knows how it feels when it’s about the stall itself out. Once the engine rebuild is done and I’ve got it FI’d I intend to let everyone I know drive it if they ask. Currently it’s a 3 speed auto, someday a 4/5 speed. On some advice I got yesterday, likely a manual 5.

I used mine for daily duty for the first 6-7 years. It had some of the same used car blemishes, but all but a few have since been corrected. I’m coming up on 10 years with the clear bra that’s on it which I’m not looking forward to replacing. Best thing I ever did was a UUC short throw/weighted knob.

Interested on your opinion on the Bilstein kit as something like that is in the future for it.

I’ve never been like this with any of my cars honestly. I actively allowed people to attempt and kill my Safari, let my close friends beat on the M3 down backroads with me in the car, and taught multiple people manual in the S10. The Silverado is my nicest and newest car I’ve ever had so only my parents and brother have gotten to drive it so far and I don’t see that changing. Once I get a new new truck though, I’ll probably be a little obsessive about it.

I do get a little crazy about people touching the windows. Mostly because it leaves finger prints. Food and drinks are allowed as long as they aren’t prone to crumbs or dripping. My only rule is I’ll let you eat in the car but it better not leave a permanent stain and if you make a mess you better clean it up. And shut the door using the handle not the window. Other than that I’m pretty normal with my car.

Oh and freshly cleaned paint, I only let a few select people (only two actually) touch it with their fingers. Mostly because they get really amazed how smooth it is and they get a better understanding of why I wash my car the way I do. And it’s fun to see them react in disbelief at how smooth it is. But I only let them do that immediately after I was it. After it’s been driven it’s a no-go.

It confuses people when I won’t let them borrow my “beat up old truck” to move their anything. But the last person who touched the tailgate (who wasn’t me) bent the handle. It’s still functional but kinda delicate after bending back, and try finding another. It’s a 330,000 mile truck and looks it. There are more things like that which I’d rather not chance on anyone else, because it will always be their fault an nearly-irreplaceable part broke.

Kinja'd!!!

People who think slamming difficult things with tons of force is the correct answer to slight difficulties make me angry. People who won’t take no for an answer make me even angrier. “Why not?” “Because it’s my truck and I said no.” “But why won’t you let me use it?” “Is it your truck? I said no.”

nobody drives any of the junk that i own. there has been MAYBE twice that i had been to discount tire, and they needed to put it in a bay....... no power steering, no power brakes, manual transmission, bump the wires under the dash to start it,  and it is LOUD. got to admit, it was REAL cool to see the windows to the shop reverberate and shake, as they pulled it in to the bay, and could hear it lope at idle in the far corner of the store. just about everyone got up to see what was making that sound..... other than that time, i dont let folks drive it, i would have a hard time forgiving someone else for wadding it up. not that it is that valuable, or rare, i just have a lot of time and effort tied up in it. and if I wad it up, well, it was my own dumb fault.......

I had to get surly with a friend who put his beer can on the hood of my Accord late one evening on a camping trip. It’s not that I’m protective of the car...but it’s still under a lease. Once we buy it, I may not care as much.

The Taco is my beloved beater...and also a manual. It’s already got blemishes, so I don’t care about that stuff, and very few people want to drive it because it’s been too long since they drove a manual.
