Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Ummm. Read the fucking book or you can swallow your, apparently, piety pride and admit you haven’t read it. What amazing concepts! It’s a shame I can’t think of an unnecessarily complicated euphemism or come up with some trendy buzzwords to call them, because then they’d be taken seriously!

Now on to the main topic of the rant. What the hell is with people who don’t try at all in college? I understand in HS, because you’re legally obligated to be there. But fucking college!? You had to apply and pay good money to be there, so why the hell are people on their phones during class and ironically doing everything they can to do the least they can. You payed your tuition, came to class, why the fuck would you then just blow it off? It’s insanity.

I hate to use “inspirational” quotes, but it reminds me of something my football coaches used to tell us.

“If you don’t put any effort into this, you’re only cheating/sabotaging yourself.”

For example, one comment on the above article was by someone saying they’d passed a literature class and only read a few chapters of one book and sparknotesing the rest. I thought, “Joke’s on you sucker! You payed X amount of money to learn what someone could’ve read off sparknotes in 30 minutes!”

I know sometimes you have to take a class not related to your major and that you’re not interested in. But still give half a shit, you have to pay for it so get your money’s worth from it. Also you never know whether that information will be useful some time later, or... you may even find you like it!

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you have to study 12 hours a day and get straight A’s (I’m somewhat opposed to that thinking as well). I’m just saying, at least give half a shit ffs.

Edit: I guess the moral of the story, is that if you don’t put any genuine effort into something you’ll never get any meaningful value from the outcome. But if you honestly try at it, you’ll actually find out if you value or don’t value the outcome of it.

It’s different when mommy and daddy are paying for it.

True, but the core issue is broader than just college. It amazes me how much people will do to build an image of commitment/knowledge/mastery of something while not giving a fuck about it. It’s like, actually commit a little to it or admit you don’t give a shit about it.

Because when you’re taking six engineering courses, sometimes you get irrational and take a night off.

A lot of people are afraid of saying “I don’t know”. Growing up with a mom who “knew” everything, it took a while to learn that it was ok to admit that sometimes you have no fucking clue about a thing. I suspect a lot of people never grow out of it, pretending to know everything, even things you don’t actually care about, satisfies some people’s insecurities.

Because high school was boring because they cater to the lowest in the class, and you developed bad habits because you never had to work for it. Or the TA teaching the class is straight off the boat and you can’t understand a word they’re saying anyway. Or mommy and daddy are paying for it so it’s just a big party. Or your paying for it but it’s still just a big party and you don’t care about cheating yourself. Depends on which year and how far into your/their major.

There are people that attend college even though they should not be there? It has become clear that you will not make it without a bachelor’s or above. There used to be vocational schools for people that did not want/need to go to college. It is pretty difficult to find apprenticeships as well. The people that used to be in these programs, now have to go to college. I could not hack it in school, but all the classes seemed pretty stupid. The classroom is just not for me. I learn what I need to complete an objective. I don’t pay attention unless I see a practical purpose. The Army was perfect for me, I learned how to operate/repair specific sets of electronics. I was mediocre during training, but excelled once I started doing my actual job.

tl;dr

People go to college because they think that is the only way to advance in life. Not all people excel in the college setting.

I’m not talking so much about excelling, but just putting effort into it. I wasn’t really a college bound student in HS either. Joined the Army too after HS and though, “shit free college, might as well.”

The thing is, even if you’re doing it purely for to get ahead it still means you should put some decent effort into it. Because everyone else in college is going to get the same piece of paper, if you just skate by and do the bare minimum your going to be behind all those other people who at least developed a decent work ethic, study skills, etc. while they were there.

I was lucky to have an excellent literature and English teacher in high school so when I had to take my liberal arts classes I basically went to class but never cracked a book and got all A’s. but that was engineering school, so the liberal arts are just filler credits. Chemistry and physics were another ball game.

Let’s be honest here, the students almost never pay for it, their parents or insane student loans do. In the case of the latter, lots of dumbass students don’t understand the noose around their own neck, and with the former, many don’t care because they’ve been spoon fed their entire entitled lives.

The student loans thing is ridiculous. It’s insane how much more necessary college is, but how expensive it is.

My parents went to UT in the early 80's, or something. When the school owned an oil field to subsidize tuition. They said they only payed $300 a semester for tuition, books, and fees. With inflation, that’s still cheaper than a community college today.

I didn’t read your rant (because I didn’t read the article in question) - I just stopped by to say I very much like Chevelle wagons such as the ‘70 pictured.
