Kinja'd!!!

I found this rather nice looking GMT800 3/4 ton Suburban on eBay. The miles aren’t atrocious (135k) and it looks great. I tracked down the owner today and took it for a spin. It drives great. The issues I found on it were: the ABS/Brake lights illuminate shortly after setting off- wheel sensor? The front leather seat bottoms are trashed and so-so repaired. The bottoms in leather run $200 apiece from theseatshop.com. And, the carpet was shampooed by someone who REALLY like soap... it needs a really good rinse- if felt sticky and gross. The seller says he’s asking $10,900 which is way above clean dealer retail (around$7k). Should I take it on for a PPI and make an offer? Should I Just put in a bid and see what happens? Should I just stick with my falling-apart GMT400 1/2-ton turd Suburban? Should I get ready to bend over at the pump with a 6.0 and 4.10 gears?

Ideally I’d love to find a 3/4 ton with a 6.0, leather, no moonroof, and dual climate. This one checks about half the boxes... Should I just wait it out? 3/4 ton Suburbans aren’t easy to find.

My goal is to buy something that will last until 300k miles or 5-10 years, whichever comes first, and can do everything I need it to- tow a trailer, cart kiddos, take road trips, commute in comfort, haul dogs and so forth. Also, NOT FALL APART like a *certain* half ton Suburban with its made-of-glass 4L60E and 10 bolt rear and gutless, manifold-gasket-eating Vortec 5.7.

Jesus, 6.0 and 4.10s.

Also who thought it was a good idea to put the 4L60E behind the 5.7? Even the 4.3 was too much for it if you didn’t have a trans cooler.

I love me some big bodied ‘burban 2500's. His price is way steep. I have been secretly looking for a big block edition to replace my 3/4 ton van. I bought the van just for the engine and transmission, it was only $200 for a 6.0 and a 4L80E, but drove it through the winter. I only drive like 45 miles a week, so the big block won’t hurt me as bad. Yeah 6.0 and 4:10's will hurt you think around 8-10mpg. The good news is you’ll get pretty much the same no matter how you drive it.

What mileage are you getting now? Expect maybe 12, on a good day. That said, I loath the GMT400, and find the GMT800 to be a genuinely good truck. The 6.0 is also damn near bulletproof, not as in it will run forever terribly like a SBC, but it will realistically run forever well as long as you somewhat keep up with maintenance.

Currently, I’m getting 14-15 commuting and 17-18 highway. I’m extremely pleased with this mileage. When I drove out to the Grand Canyon I really had to put my foot in it to keep pace with a blustery headwind and high elevation- still got 15.7 mpg. But that 5.7 is gutless as hell at highway speeds. Cruise control is useless on the freeway since it just hunts for gears the whole time.

I’ve been hearing 12-13 city and 14-15 highway with a 6.0. I tend to have a fairly light foot most of the time, so that might help. 8-10 is what I hear is average city/highway for an 8.1 liter.

Plenty of fish in the sea with those, 10.9k is highway robbery.

The 6.0 isn’t gutless at all, though I haven’t driven a Suburban with one. Nor have I driven one with a 4L. The 4L just likes to hunt in my experience.

I certainly didn’t get any feeling of gutlessness on my test drive today. I’d sure like to have something where I can set the cruise at 75 mph and just have it climb over hills without doing the obnoxious upshiftdownshiftupshiftdownshiftupshiftdownshift dance. God I wish GM built a Suburban with a half ass decent turbo diesel. 6.2? It’s a piece of shit- stick it in a Suburban! 6.5? That’s a piece of shit, too! Stick it in a Suburban! 6.6 Duramax? This engine is amazing! Don’t EVER offer it in a Suburban!

the ABS/Brake lights illuminate shortly after setting off- wheel sensor?

Yes, wheel sensor. I have one on my 2500HD Silverado that is temperature sensitive. Only does it when cold outside and hasn’t been driven yet. Generally goes away after it is warmed up.

The seller says he’s asking $10,900 which is

...complete and utter Crack Pipe for a 6.0 2500. It might be worth it if it had the 8.1, and was immaculate.

Should I get ready to bend over at the pump with a 6.0 and 4.10 gears?

Dude, it’s a *3/4 ton Suburban*. Of course, you are going to bend over at the pump. What did you expect? :)

Honestly? 13 city, 15 highway. I’d be happy with that. If it really is 8-10, what is the point of the 6.0? That’s what an 8.1 gets.

The front ABS sensors are a known problem on these, but not particularly expensive, and sometimes the only thing that’s needed is to take the sensor out and clean the mating surface between them.

A buddy of mine had one of these, I think he got like 12-14 mpg on the highway, so yeah bend over at the pump.

A Duramax gets 14-18. You aren’t getting great mileage either way (my guess on the 6.0 is 12-14MPG). And at over $2.20/gal (last time I went by the gas station near my house), it’s not cheap.

So I don’t complain about the empeegees on a truck. If I want cheap to run, I’ll drive a Honda (or the 1.0L Fiesta).

Empeegees would be nice, but 2 dogs, wife, kiddo, future kiddos, travel trailer, being 6'7", owning a car trailer/having a car hobby... A Fiesta just isn’t going to make me happy. I can drive a small car (I own an NC Miata that’s sitting in a shed somewhere in Minnesota) but as soon as you add a car seat and a passenger and some luggage to my big ass self, it starts to feel really claustrophobic in anything less than a Burb.

I can sympathize with being tall. I drive a Mini (albeit without car seats for kiddos and doggos), but I would likely pass on this Burb.

Also look at Yukon XLs. The guy I bought my Silverado from went from a 2500HD pickup to a half ton Yukon XL. 6.0 and AWD may be enough and you are more likely to get leather and dual AC.

TBH, I’m not really sure... I’ve never shopped for these.

I’d get a PPI to start with. If it’s good, mayber offer what dealers are selling for or a hair under? I find dealers are usually high, but it’s a lot more reasonable than what he’s asking and for more hard-to-find vehicles they can be a lot closer to the mark.

I had a 6.0 2500 pickup and got 10-12 around town and 15 on the highway pretty consistently.

A half ton Yukon XL with 6.0/awd is a Denali XL & they come completely loaded. BUT they are a “High-output” 6.0 like the Escalade and like premium gas, that plus the added maintenance of the AWD system & 4l65 transmission I don’t think it’s a good investment if you want 300k out of it

Regular 4x4 Yukon XL’s can come loaded but only have the 5.3/4l60e

Yukon XL 2500's are the same as Suburban 2500's

I’d offer him 8k. A dealer back home in Michigan had a Yukon 2500 8.1 with similar mileage for 9800 and our truck prices are pretty high... especially for a clean rust free truck

The first car I ever drove was a brown ‘84 Diesel Suburban. It had 250k ish miles and was good for 20 MPG. Towing? Forget about it.

I had an ‘05 3/4 ton with the 8.1. Loaded, full leather, bose, rear DVD, 3 zone climate etc. The thing was a complete monster. AMA about them.

This price sounds really high. When I sold my ‘05 a few years ago with 150K on the odo I had trouble getting $12K for it, had a couple people look and mine was in immaculate condition. I was offered $7K as trade in value. Ended up selling it for $9500 to a family member (family discount!).

I can’t imagine justifying a 3/4 ton over any decent 1/2 ton these days unless you are going to work it hard. We used the 3/4 ton 8.1 for a lot of towing, but in the end a 1/2 ton truck would have been enough vehicle for everything we pulled, including the 27' travel trailer...
