Kinja'd!!!

I’m volunteering this week at my good friend’s auto repair while he takes his wife on vacation. Someone called today to ask an opinion about whether they should buy a Volvo. (Not this one.)

148k miles on the chassis
100k on the 2.5L engine
$2,600

Seems like a fair price for a very nice car.

That’s not the actual car. But that’s the year.

yes. Thats what I say. Thats a fine and comfortable cruiser for crap-box money. The non-turbo engine is smooth and quiet and eternal as long as you change the oil. The chassis is like a 740 but with more sound dampening and better suspension. The seats bear much similarity to a lay-z-boy, but with far higher materials quality.

I figured that. I just meant in general. They are very nice well put together cars.

Last of the rear-wheel-drive Volvos. Good reputation for durability. The 2.5 in those is an I6. Should be pretty smooth. Seems like a good price if it is clean and has no major issues.

They’re really the last “old Volvo”. The newest, solid RWD tough Swedish brick. My brother is a hardcore Volvo guy and he’ll tell you the 6 cylinder isn’t as strong as the red block, but thats only when you try to dump 15+lbs of boost into them. The NA version is smooth and reliable, a nice torquey confident motor. You can argue against a good inline 6.

I carpooled with a lady who had a green one of those with the v6 for a while - it had quite a few issues after 100,000. (And they have surprisingly little headroom for a tall-ish looking cabin.)

What a great testimonial. That’s the kind of solid Oppo advice that makes Oppo excellent.

US 960s are 2.9s. They have a resonant vibration problem that originally necessitated timing belt replacement every 30k, later bumped up. Decent cars, but aside from smoothness the six does nothing that the 940 turbo won’t, and the 4-cylinder B230FT is by far the better engine, and cheaper to care for. Not a bad car for the money though.
