VW has sold three completely different cars under the Fox nameplate.

Kinja'd!!!

There was the Fox that most North Americans associate with the Fox name, which has produced from 1987 to 1993 and based off the Brazilian VW Gol.

Kinja'd!!!

Then there was the second VW Fox, which replaced the Lupo and was replaced by the Up!. Like the North American Fox, it was Brazilian.

Kinja'd!!!

And last, as well as the least known, the South African VW Fox. Similar concept to the Citi Golf, except it was based off the Mk1 Jetta instead of the Mk1 Golf. This one was not Brazilian.

There’s also the Audi Fox from the 70s, a rebadged Dasher/Passat

Also, VW should sell a cheap small car like the Fox/Gol/Up again in the US.

This raises an interesting question... which nameplate was most used on radically different cars?

Only other one I can think of is the Buick Regal:

- A/G-Body RWD Regal, US built Sedan/Coupe/Wagon

- W-Body FWD Regal, US/Canada Built Sedan/Coupe

- Epsilon FWD/AWD Regal, Germany/Canada Built Sedan

- Epsilon II Regal/AWD, Germany Built Hatchback/Wagon

Don’t forget they sold the Audi 80 as the Audi Fox too.. and that’s how I ended up arguing with a mechanic about what I drove while trying to price a wheel bearing on my 91 Fox..

Me: Volkswagen Fox.

Him: Fox.. Audi right?

Me: no, Volkswagen.

Him; but it’s an Audi Fox.

Me: No, made by VW in Brazil, sold here, 1.8 from a golf but sideways..

Him: same thing.

Me: never mind..

Dodge Dart.

It went from being a muscle car to the car you’d take over a Chrysler 200 from Enterprise.

Interesting story about that 1980s VW Fox. If you bought a particular Leica telephoto lens for your SLR they would give you a free VW Fox. The car sold for $5990 at the time, and the lens sold for $60K.

I suspect that if you bought one of those lenses on the used market today the car wouldn’t be included. I wonder how many of those lenses they actually sold?
