6 speed instead of 5 speed manual.
CVT still a thing you can get, now with 7(!) fake ratios.
2.0 still there, with direct injection and 5(!) more furious ponies.

The new platform is supposed to be a little lighter too (I would guess about 100 lbs less)
The 6 speed will be a plus too since the ratios are closer and shorter for better performance (the mpg actually go down 1 in the city with the 6 speed vs the 5).
The fact that is still doesn’t have the FB25 or a turbo means that its still completely unsuited to people who live at altitude though. Thanks Subaru for listening!

As an owner (and by owner I mean my wife drives a leased one) of a loaded Impreza hatchback, and a firm believer that Outbacktificating any vehicle makes that vehicle worse, I do declare, the Impreza is still better.

I like that the XV has some legit off road chops...minus the motor. The 2018 impreza hatch angries my blood for being shorter than the sedan when they could have made it a real. since its still bigger than a hatch should be.

Look how much crap fits in our 2016!
Most Crosstrek buyers don’t take them off road, they just think it’s better in winter because of the ground clearance and ugly cladding. Which technically is true because the truckier tires Subaru equips it with are at least adequate in winter unlike the garbage Yokohama S34D OE tires on the Impreza.
Although now the OE tire on the Impreza is this Firestone FT140 which has very minimal reviews on Tire Rack, although the entire text of one of the 9 reviews is “downright useless in snow.” So....probably not so good.

I can tell you all the “cars” I see in the backcountry are XV here in Utah. If its not then its a forester or outback....cept that one time I saw a passat after a creek crossing...
The trouble isn’t the seats down space, its the space with the seats up with kids in them. Not a lot of boot (y)

I get that they needs those mpgees, but where people buy subi’s to use them (mountain areas) it means going VERY slow. I’ve driven a few XV’s here both empty and loaded and in both cases they weren’t much more capable (speedwise) than my cruiser...which is a VERY low bar. Seriously, I haven’t driven something as painfully slow since my gen 1 rav4

I have a 2.5I Outback. It is adequate, just adequate. By 1980's standards it would be great. But with 75 and 80 mph speed limits it’s about 50 HP behind the curve.

This irritates me to no end. My mom’s 2009 impreza had 6" less trunk than my 2002. The newer ones are even worse. Just put a long butt on the car and it would be so much more usable.

They did a good job of masking the swoopiness of the new Impreza out of it, and that new color is cool too. I like the 2017 wheels better. Great news they put the 6sp manual in rather than the 5.

Not a refresh, this is based on the new impreza chassis that will underpin most of their products. Stiffer lighter and more flexible for sharing. It doesn’t look a ton different though.

I used to think there were a lot of Outbacks in Utah (and there are). Holy shit though - The amount of XVs around here is absolutely insane. I lifted an ex’s Outback in 2011 and mine in 2012. For a while it was nice to have something that was a little different. Then the XVs entered and with how fat Imprezas had become, my Outback with 2" of lift didn’t even look like anything next to a XV. Lame.

So slow. My girlfriend has a ‘13 Impreza with the CVT and it’s painfully slow. I cannot imagine it with larger and heavier tires.

Sometimes they’re fine though. It’s especially frustrating when a car that is marketed almost entirely on being good in foul weather has tires that don’t work in the snow. There are plenty of decent cheaply available all-season tires that are perfectly decent in the snow. I don’t expect Blizzak levels of snow traction, just something that will at least be safe .
