This would be such a great replacement for the Frontier and a possible Xterra replacement.

Coil springs on all 4 corners. Looks great inside and out. The only engine is a tiny 2.3 Bi-Turbo diesel with 184 Hp and 333 lbs-ft. 7 speed auto or 6 speed manual. Rear locker optional.

I hear its not a hard core off roader but still a pretty great truck. Whats taking so long Nissan?

Is this coming stateside?

Thats the rumor, but nothing confirmed. I sure hope so. I mean it will have a version of the VQ...because of course it will...but it still looks like a much improved truck.

Would definitely be a nice update for a vehicle that was released in 2004 and last facelifted in ‘10.

I hope they bring it here and it’s as affordable as the Frontier. I’m shopping right now and I’m finding so many Frontiers in my price range, but I won’t buy one because lower towing capacity (i’d prefer more than 6500lbs) and the powertrain is just so outdated.

To be fair, if you need more than 6500 lbs towing you should probably be looking at half tons anyway. The 4.0 isn’t too bad actually, i mean its thirsty, but its still one of the faster and more powerful engines in the segment. Still, it would be nice to see an updated 3.5 liter navara here to replace the frontier. Though the current 3.5 is a little light on power at 260/240 hp/lbs-ft so lets hope its better than that.

Then again, 3rd gen Navara has been in production since 2014, so its not exactly new.

Sure but the Colorado was even older than that when it was retooled for US consumption.

Yea I’m cross shopping with half tons. It just blows my mind how many Frontiers come up when i’m shopping. I’m including six cylinders in my search since i’m looking at the Ford Ecoboost, which of course means I get flooded with Frontiers.

My mom had an Xterra. It wasn’t a bad vehicle. She liked it. I just wish they would update it.

And I don’t *need* 6500 lbs, but I subscribe to the buy more truck than you need philosophy. I would buy a 3/4 ton if it was in my price range (and would fit in my garage. Which it won’t)

I would love to see it here, but they would have to build it stateside to avoid the chicken tax. Not sure how hard it would be to convert the existing Frontier lines to the Navarra.

They are going to have to do something with those lines, right? No more Xterra and the Frontier can’t stick around forever.

Makes sense to me, but that doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. Looks like until the most recent redesign, the Frontier and Navarra were basically identical. However, that bodes the question of why they didn’t redesign the Frontier at the same time?

People have liked them here in Mexico, both as base work mules or every day trucks.

Word on the street is that the Titan was priority #1, as they really thought they were building a full size to take on the big 3 and once [if] that took off they would use the incoming capitol to rebuilt the rest of the truck line. Those plans may be on hold. Its like trying to build a better 3 series...it doesn’t matter if you do it, its not a 3 series. When is Toyota/Nissan going to learn that taking on the full size truck market is never going to really work.

That makes sense I guess. They seemed to have put real effort behind it with the HD version and Cummins diesels. They just have a huge uphill fight to go against the ingrained domestics. Toyota has done a decent job with the Tundra, but until you have a full lineup 1500/2500/3500+ you’re just playing. I don’t see any of the imports attempting to go head on. The Tundra seems likes its straddling the 1500/2500 line, and I think the Titan HD is supposed to be a “2500", but no idea how they’re selling.

I think this 5/8th ton truck is going to backfire. It has to be as heavy as a 3/4 ton to be in Class 2b and enjoy the more relaxed emissions standards but the power is down, the towing and payload are WAY down and the mileage doesn’t really seem to be there either. The half ton I hear is actually quite good but no one is going to be shopping a titan unless they have better deals on the hood than the others...which isn’t going to happen.

The trouble for the XD is that the market it would be ideally suited for - people who have a 5th wheel but don’t want a 3/4 ton - have options in the F150 which has better payload and nearly as good of towing. Sure the tow mileage is worse but the daily mileage is way better...which is why you didn’t want a 3/4 ton in the first place.

I.e. -

2017 3.5 EB F150 4 door 4x4 - 12000 lbs towing, 2600-2780 lbs payload (17/21/19 mpg)

2017 Titan XD 4 door 4x4 - 11660 lbs towing, 1620 lbs payload (Can’t be much better mpg)

Looking at the payloads and GVWR it looks like it compares pretty well with the Ram 2500. For most higher trim levels, the Ram has a payload around a ton. The Ford and GM options are higher, but then again they also aren’t on coils. I just like you can get the Pro-4x package with a locker. Its surprisingly uncommon to have a selectable locker in the full size market.

RAM payloads are crap until you get in the full ton or get the really stiff towing packages though. F150 has a selectable rear locker too. In fact you can get it with extended fuel tanks as well and uprated alternator with dual battery. Its a pretty decent looking rig (on paper at least) for the overlandy stuff.

I just can’t figure out why Nissan didn’t get a full floater in the XD. Makes NO sense to me. With a full floater in the back you could have reserve payload for people who want it for slide in campers or for an updated work truck.

I’ve been debating moving into a pickup at some point since I’ve never owned one, and saw how bad the payloads on the 1500 are. I guess prioritizing on-road driving and having heavy options makes an impact. My FILs 1500 Big Horn has the same payload as my 100 series. For that reason, I was looking at the 2500s. I don’t need 12k towing, but I do want between 1500-2000 pounds payload. Considering their the same footprint, its not too unwieldy either.

For some reason I missed that the Fx4 came with a locker. I knew that GM used the G80, and Dodge put them on the power wagon, but I missed it on the Ford. You can get them on all the midrange trucks aside from the ridgeline I believe too.

You can get it on all models, not just the FX4. Coworker just bought a 2.7 EB access cab with the rear locker. He got a long bed and is building up an aluminum platform for bedding and storage, then he’ll carpet.

There’s actually two different Navara’s - one is leaf sprung (like the Mexican examples) and the other is coil. Both are available here in Oz.

The new coil sprung version has just had a mid-life engineering refresh due to the first iteration not having quite the right set-up in the back end. A little too much sag and not the taut control that the locals were hoping for apparently.

Given the next generation Navara will also spawn the Renault Alpine and the X Class Mercedes then I’d be (am?) looking to wait till all three hit the market and cross shop. However, I’m fairly sure that none of them are ever intended for North America.

In other news, Hyundai Australia are hoping for big things in this space in 2022.

I still think the Navara will be here eventually as the frontier. but that could change based on if they just decide to drop it. I would love to see it here.

I think they’ll make sense to the general US population...eventually. But not yet. Not for some time.

By the way, we can get converted Titans down under now. Bling versions as usual but still under AU$100,000 which isn’t too bad in the local converted US truck market...
