Mr. Regular is right, the Peugeot 206 is a great little car. I think it would have been a great reintroduction for Peugeot on the US market.
They even already had the bumpers for american safety regulations figured out:

This was the GT version of the 206, which served as a homologation model for the 206 WRC. The thing is: it was too short for FIA, so to get to the mandatory 4,00m, they just extended the bumpers.

The US market would have demanded this abomination though. I didn’t even know these existed until I spotted one a few years back with Romanian plates.

Maybe I’m overestimating the hatchback sales in the US.

They were too small and possibly not cheap enough for the US. The 406 sedan+coupe would’ve been a better fit, imho. More appropriate size, conservative but stylish looks and more durable than the 206.

Yes, but then the U.S. would of gone on and on about having a station-wagon. :)

I’ve always thought of the 206 as a lardy overweight version of the 106 with the same engines, but I suppose I can’t think of a car less suited to the US market than the 106 ;)

That’s the way I thought of the 307 :)

Seems adequate, since the last Peugeots they had were the 505 and the 405.

The first generation 206 was released too early to catch on in the US market. We really didn’t become accepting of small cars as more than something you’re stuck getting until the middle of last decade, when the Mini, the xA/xB, the Fit, the Versa and the Fiesta made subcompacts something that you’d actually want to buy.

It’s still on sale in Argentina with the face of the 207, so it wasn’t that bad of a car if it lasted so many years. Although I wouldn’t own one.

Brazil also managed to make a truck out of it but it wasn’t a success:
