A thing never seen, and some may say thankfully so

Yesterday I saw a Mk2 Escort at a show.

This one. An immaculate build, isn’t it? Not sure about the clearance for the air filters or the back of the engine though.

Kinja'd!!!

Note the clear front cover so you can admire the cam belt and pulleys.

Kinja'd!!!

Pulleys? What’s this? The only Escorts to have DOHC engines had BDAs. This isn’t a BDA. Let’s take a closer look.

Kinja'd!!!

Opel? What blasphemy is this? A GM engine sitting proudly in a Ford car?

It’ll give some diehard fanboys aneurisms. That alone should be worth it.

Yeah, I would never do this, and I’m sure that Opel and Ford fan boys will both hate it, but I love that someone said screw it, I’m doing it.

As an Opel fanboi I think it’s hilarious. I wouldn’t even mind an old Opel Kadett with a Ford Zetec engine.

Umm. What about the Escort Twin Cam...?

However, I don’t think it is so much of a heresy. Wasn’t the redtop GM engine fitted with Coscast (“Cosworth cast”) heads...?

Well, the twin cam was a Mk1 and was chain driven...I guess I should have said “the only Mk2s to have DOHC engines...”

I can’t comment on Cosworth making the heads though.

Interestingly this is the second Escort I’ve seen with that engine.

What’s more, it’s the second Escort I’ve seen with that engine.

The red top is a common engine swap due to how readily available they are and relatively straight forwards they are to fit

I have this old dream about taking a Lotus Omega to the Wörthersee. This is similar.

I’d love to see the faces of all the hurt VAG fans the moment you cruise by in a Lotus Omega. Wörthersee is supposedly becoming worse every year.

Reminds me of this

Worry not. You are spot-on 99,999999% of the time!

“BDA engine” has become now almost synonym with “fast Ford Escort” and it is easy to forget the very early - as you rightly say – Lotus-engined DOHC versions.

I think Cosworth manufactured the heads for a while - later they used another supplier. Cosworth (who developed the head for the MB 190 2.3 16, for instance) did not design them though – they were an Opel Germany project.

It seems to be a popular option. Those “red top” engines used to have a very good reputation, and they are certainly easier to come by (and several orders of magnitude cheaper) than the YBs used in the Sierra/Escort Cosworths, another popular retrofit.

I’ve even heard about Rover K engines (Elise spec) used in fastish Escorts Mk 1/Mk2, the main advantage (probably the only one...) being their lower weight.

I’ve thought about going to a Group B meeting with one of these:

I just watched a Sourkrauts Wörthersee vid and a guy with a nice, clean B1 Audi complained that some assholes greeted them with super soakers full of pee when they went through a roundabout with the windows down. So yes, seems like it’s going downhill fast.

I read that various pre meets are much more relaxed and friendlier than the commercialized meet itself.

Super soaker with pee? Someone really wants to be beaten to shit or run over. They should consider themselves lucky to not live someplace with firearm carrying.

now you know how some of us feel when we see an LSx engine in a Mustang.
