Kinja'd!!!

So out of the blue it’s working again. Either these American cars are now to the point of being unreported self-healing technological marvels, or something electrical is loose. Pointless taking it to Ford with a fault that can’t show itself, so until next time, Mustang...

For anyone in the know, why is this so? The display says everything is working fine, but no air is being pushed out of the vents no matter what fan speed or setting it’s on. I’ve checked fuses and on visual inspection they’re fine. A/C clutch kicks in fine. Looks like the blower motor is dead after 2,500miles??

I have heard that there’s a relay that could cause this. Of course with that few miles and a three year warranty, take it to the dealer...

Warranty job it is then. I’m hoping it’s just the relay so it’s a quick fix. I checked forums to no avail, where’s your info from?

Can I have that Panda in the background? :P I’ve heard they are fairly reliable and I have a thing for basic cheap cars...plus, a Panda 4x4 would be awesome for Canadian winters and I am a FIAT fan.

Not sure how they cope with copious amounts of road salt though...

Good luck getting the blower sorted out!

change some relays around first

Weren’t you in Canada? The first mk2 Pandas will be legal there next year. https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=245892250

edit: mk2 4x4 Pandas were introduced a year later. Unlike the mk1 Panda the mk2 isn’t overly rust prone at all as far as I’m aware.

Awesome to hear they aren’t too rust prone! Maybe I will have to consider one :P

Yup, I know they were available to import here soon, also knew the 4x4s were a year later, so it would be a little awhile yet.

Wonder how cheaply I could get a low-km one shipped over here with no issues...I would need a LHD one though, RHD can be expensive to insure here and very few insurance companies will do it.

If you can hear the fan it’s potentially a severely clogged filter although unlikely. If not it’s time to give that warranty a work out. Typical it’d happen on one of the hottest days of the year haha.

They suffer from rust around the tailgate handle and the arches if they’re not cared for. Mine had started bubbling at ten years old.

There’s no noise at all. It’s so quiet you can here the A/C compressor kick on through the vents. It just has no power.

Must be resistor pack or relay or something. Might be a big warranty job, access to HVAC stuff is usually awful in modern cars.

A decent LHD one (fwd) could probably be shipped to a Canadian port for €4k or so, including shipping. I linked to an LHD 2003 above. The 4x4 versions cost more though and are far rarer.

Apparently the resistor pack still means the fan will work on Max, so that can be ruled out. Really curious, it was working fine at the start of the drive - switched it off - switched it on later... nothing

Also blower motor relay is easily accessible in the main fuse box under the bonnet. Way easier than the interior fuse box, which is conveniently located in the exact same position as the LHD car, therefore right next to the go faster pedal.

If I can find a matching one in the fuse box, I will. I have the ‘box diagram and codes so if there’s one in there I’ll do a switcheroo

Resistor Pack or harness connector to the resistor pack not making a solid connection (with manual A/C this is normally the case). That’s far more likely than the blower motor outright failing.

Also, consider that if you have an issue with the resistor pack, and high speed is a direct 12V connection to the battery via a relay, that relay has to trigger via a second 12V circuit from the HVAC controller.

When I experienced this failure on my truck (GMT800 trucks are notorious for the connector failing and causing locally high resistance in the circuit, which causes the connector to melt...), the ground is what was melted and failed to connect, so therefore even the relay could not close to go to full fan speed.

If I found one that were cared for, I would be caring for it once I got it. I make sure all the regular maintenance gets done and I undercoat my car every year. Did you ever have any big reliability issues with yours? I would want a base model 4x4 if there is such a thing, with the manual windows and everything....I like simple :P

Hopefully a nice quick fix then, I just remember changing the cabin filter in my Mondeo. Bastard of a job.

I only made it 1500 miles eith mine before I threw in the towel but I had the problematic diesel, ine that had been poorly cared for at that. If you got one of the petrols you’d probably be fine.

I would probably just go for the most common reliable petrol engine, which, from what I’ve read is the 1.2L. I don’t care about performance as much in my DD....they always say it’s more fun driving slow cars fast anyway :P

Changing the cabin filter on my ‘09 Accent is actually a 5 minute job...pull two rubber stoppers/tabs, flip the glove box lid the whole way forward, pop off cabin filter lid, put in new one and repeat in reverse order.

The 1.2 is basically better in eery way than the diesel. I got tempted by the diesel’s lower running costs, which ended up costing me more money anyway haha.

Not bad, the Mondeo needed partial dash disassembly haha.

Sounds like the 1.2 is the way to go! If I didn’t get the 4x4, a Panda 100hp would be pretty fun :P

The 100hp is definitely the way to go. Bear in mind the 4x4 has a 20 second 0-60.

20-second 0-60? I would still be fine with this :P

My Accent isn’t exactly the epitome of acceleration....I think it’s 8 or 9 seconds 0-60? The 126 I want to import will be slightly worse :P

I have no clue if the CAN-BUS controls the signal to the blower motor, but on my FiST I get occasional (like 4 times in 4 years) lock-ups of pretty much anything on the center stack. Solution is just to pull the negative battery cable and give it a full reset or just wait a few hours/driving cycles for it to clear itself.
