I don’t know if there is an actual term for this move, but I’ve only ever seen Illinois people do this so I’ve taken to calling it The Illinois Left. What happens is at a stop light there will be cars going straight both directions, the offender is first in line in the left turn lane. When the light turns green they gun it making a left in front of on coming traffic who is also beginning to move forward. Like, you saved 30 seconds, congrats.

And just so you Illinois peoples don’t forgot

If you have the right-of-way, take it! But you gotta be quick.

Not as bad as the Cape Cod Creep, where cars will slowly advance out from a side street onto a main road, forcing cars to stop to let them turn.

It seems to be only done by Illinois/Chicago people in the upper Midwest, I’ve only ever seen it done by them.

Randomly seen in Ohio at intersections that are such traffic heavy that a turn light should be installed but hasn’t been. After sitting through 1-2 light cycles holding up an entire lane the offender will goose it to make the turn. Three blocks from my house there is such a light.

I had a lady the other day driving a 90s extra-cab Chevy pickup and a dog in her lap and a child in the right seat...

I was in the left turn lane on the arrow making a left turn and Genius Lady hooks a U-turn from one of the right lanes and comes right around in front of me and cuts me off.

As Blondude posted, it has different names from different cities, interestingly all northeastern. It’s (sadly) very common.

I’ve seen it in other areas, but I don’t know of an area outside Chicago where it seems to be sufficiently prevalent that you can stereotype a group of people for doing it.

IMHO, it seems like a great way to get T-boned.

Happens a lot in and around Philly when the left turn doesn’t have a protected turn green light. In many cases, not taking the turn means having to wait for many cycles until an opening comes because opposing traffic is heavy and won’t give you a chance. The solution is to install a protected left turn indicator into the traffic light.

My ex once did this while we were going to pick up my car from the shop because she “wanted to show me how good at driving she was”. My terrified expression was interpreted as some kind of respect so she did it again on the drive. I told her to drop me off and I would walk the rest of the way.

Well, you’ve got to give the straight-through traffic at least a couple of seconds to react to the green light first. They have the right-of-way, but if they’re choosing (intentionally or otherwise) to “yield”, then I don’t see a problem with it. I’ve taken my left in front of somebody who was busy texting once (after waiting a bit to make it super-obvious to everybody else that the other driver wasn’t showing any signs of moving), and even waved “thank you!” as I crossed.

I’ll admit, I was deliberately pretending to misinterpret their hesitation as if they really were letting me through. But I hope they got the deeper message: when you have the right-of-way, GO!

This is not uncommon in Michigan.

During driver’s ed, I was sitting at a red light when my instructor pointed to a Chevy Astro across the intersection from us and said to me, “He’s going to try to beat you off the line when the light changes so he can make his turn. Don’t give him a chance to.” So I payed close attention to the light and floored it as soon as it turned green. The the skinny little tires on the front of that Mk1 Focus chirped, the other students in the back seat yelped, and we shot across that intersection as fast as that little 4-cylinder sedan could with four occupants on board. My instructor looked at me and said, “Be a little gentler next time, Austin.”

“Justin. My name is Justin.”

“Oh, sorry Jason.”

I think this is more of a Chicago thing than an Illinois thing. Used to see it all the time in the city, but it’s been a while since I moved to the burbs.

Either way, it’s an idiot move.

Assuming the person across from you goes when they’re supposed to, yes, it would be failure to give way (might be worded slightly differently depending on the state). A cop could ticket you for it, and you’d certainly be at fault in a crash.

I’ve been away from Illinois for a few years but don’t remember ever seeing this, and I grew up in Chicago. I’ve always heard it referred to as a Pittsburgh left, but I’ve never been there so can’t confirm that either.
