Kinja'd!!!

Rumor has had it for a while, that despite collaborating with BMW, Toyota will release the next Supra with a hybrid V-6 powertrain. But the Supra has always had an inline 6! But wait, isn’t there another Toyota that has a hybrid V-6 setup?

Kinja'd!!!

Get excited, folks, because this is the future!

...

Just kidding, here’s the car I’m really talking about!

Kinja'd!!!

That’s right, the TS050 racing at Le Mans right now is here to test the tech that will trickle down to the next Supra. I’m calling it now, if Toyota wins this year (we’ll see) then we’re going to see the next Supra revealed sooner rather than later.

Let’s just hope the Supra isn’t cancelled 3 minutes before making it to production...

In that case it won’t make it to production. They wouldn’t want the Supra tarnishing their reputation of reliability :p

Very true but if they are working with BMW as reported, I’m sure ze Germanz will put their foot down and demand an I6.

I thought I read companies were planning going to I6s again, Mercedes I think I read. I have an I5 Merc and and I6 Datsun so I’m a fan.

Hehehe, if the Supra can drive balls-out ten-tenths for 23 hours and 56 minutes, then it’s still better than a lot of other sports cars out there *cough* *Z06* *cough*

All seriousness though, Le Mans tech has to be overbuilt to the extreme and that’s a Supra tradition as well (2JZ-GTE is pretty good in the MKIV)

I thought it was confirmed to be using the M3 engine?

Much as I love the sound and balance of the I6 setup, I’m becoming partial to the better weight distribution offered by a V6 (it sits further back.) Looking forward to seeing the Supra and Z5 comparisons if they end up with wildly different powertrains. That’d be the best of both worlds, both an I6 and a V6 available in a similar chassis...

The I5 is my absolute favorite engine setup. Someday I’d like to put a Volvo 2.5t powertrain into my MR2...

I’m excited for the Mercedes I6s since they’ll inevitably be smooth-running and luxurious. Used to daily a V6 C-Class and it was super smooth despite the V6 setup.

Had not heard about that! Can’t say I’m sure how I’d feel about a Supra with that motor but I’m sure it’ll be fast.

Where did you hear about that? If it was the M4 GTS engine with water injection, that could be very interesting for the Z5/Supra.

Every article I see about it refers to it having a Turbo BMW 6 which has to be the S55 right?

That’s a good point, it’s BMW’s most powerful I6 so it would make sense for the Supra or Z5 M.

Plus it’s predecessor was in the old Z4 and considering that it is still going to be called a Z4 as opposed to an i4, I’m guessing the hybrid rumour is just that. A rumour.

I’m thinking it’ll be something along the lines of the MX-5/124 Spider collaboration where each manufacturer provides it’s own engine and styling cues on the same platform. It’d surprise me if they did a repeat of the Toyobaru situation where it’s the exact same car with different front fascias and interior trim.

I miss the old days where car companies would take risks and develop cars on their own.
