Kinja'd!!!

How illegal/unethical/horrible would it be if I tried to start an Oppo transfer train so I could get a car transferred to me without paying for the transfer fee from Carmax? The car is in Washington and I want it to be in KS without paying $1000 for it!

Or - road trip? Has anyone purchased a Carmax car out of state and drove it home?

Yeah, I think a plane ticket+gas would be cheaper if you have the time.

I wouldn’t be too worried about the car, carmax cars always seem to be in good shape.

I don’t think there’s anything illegal about it, but it sounds like a PITA. I think making a road trip sounds easier and more fun. You could get a cheap ticket to fly in and drive it home.

I haven’t done a carmax road trip yet. But I plan on it for my next car. So please do it and tell me your experience.

I thought the transfer fee was applied to the purchase price of the car if you bought it.

Part of me wants to do that so bad, it’s just finding the time for an 18 hour drive (or less, because Jag).

And then my wife just said, “or more (because Jag).”

If you’re buying a used Jaguar and are trying to dodge a $1,000 fee then hooohhh boy this car is going to destroy you.

Thanks? Why wouldn’t I try to save $1000 if I could. You’re saying that since I’ll be in the shop more often I should throw out extra money regardless? Wouldn’t I want to save that for the inevitable repair bills?

Also, Carmax warranty.

I just read their Terms and Conditions, it looks like you have to pay the transfer fee and it is not applied as a credit to the sale price.

I would road trip that is a 3 day drive at the most. Beautiful country too if you go through Montana and Wyoming. Nebraska and north dakota suck....

I’m from KS so aside from Nebraska, etc everything is pretty!

I have, but it was only about 3 hours away. And I paid to ship it there...at the time it was the closest CarMax to me.

Was there anything weird about buying out of state?

Kinja'd!!! "RPM esq." (rpm3)

Not particularly, but you should figure out how sales tax is collected in both states so you don’t end up paying it twice—that’s probably the only possible complication. And sales tax in Washington is about 10%.

Which Washington CarMax is the car at?

The biggest thing about buying out of state is that you then have to pay both states’ fees.

As for the daisy chain, yes, it can work, but as soon as the car is made available and the transferring not-actual-customer releases their hold on it, someone else can claim the car and transfer or buy it. There was a CX-5 at an Ohio CarMax I was trying to get transferred to my local one, and as the employee was walking out with the pre-hold paperwork on it and do their walk-around inspection prior to transfer, a customer at the store was about to take it on a test drive prior to buying it. There’s now a HOLD button on the website, which I hope would prevent that to someone else in the future. Seconds literally can matter in this digital age.

I think it’s about 30 minutes away from the Seattle-Tacoma airport if that helps? https://www.carmax.com/car/13664786

Lynnwood. That’s the one closest to me, and I have an errand to run near there this weekend. Want me to go take a look at it for you?

Haha, man I love Oppo. That would be amazing! I don’t want to put you out, so if your schedule doesn’t allow then don’t sweat it, but I would love a car persons opinion over what a Carmax sales person says!

WA Carmax will not charge you sales tax so you should be just on the hook for KS tax. Be aware this also means that you can not finance the sales tax and it would have to be paid in full to KS DMV. Also WA only gives a 3 day temp in order for you to get back to your state of residence, you can however buy up to 3 more straight from the DOL at $30 a piece.

So, I guess a general opinion on condition, etc. that might not show up in pictures. Or if you see anything unsavory, I suppose? One problem I have is that I haven’t had a chance to drive one yet, but I’m reasonably assured that I will very much like most things about the XK. We test drove a few F-Types and I’m very much in love with them, but they offer so little in practicality terms that I think this might be a good compromise as a fun road trip car.

Very useful information! I should have thought of the temp tag, but you did it for me! I think we could hopefully make it back in 3 days...

For REAL sorry for ghosting you, it has been a very crazy story. Long story short, technically yes I bought the Jag. It is still in Washington because the water pump exploded 20 minutes after we left the dealership with it. So all plans went out the window! As of last night, the car was fixed (they replaced the water pump, hoses, cooling fan, fan control module, and an 80 amp fuse) and they were going to be testing it and then trying to figure out shipping. To their credit Carmax has been absolutely amazing so far. Once it’s down here they are going to start the 5 day return period and I’m going to have my dealer inspect it. Depending on what they say will go a long way on whether we keep it long term or not! And I’m hoping they ship it quickly, but they said if they had to ship it via their normal routes it could be up to 28 MORE DAYS.

Wow, that’s crazy! Yes, that would blow up one’s plans. I’m glad they’re making it right, and sorry you missed out on the road trip. They told me 28 days for shipping my car from Texas to Oregon too but it was really more like 2 weeks...I think they tell everyone the longer period to give themselves some breathing room. Good luck!
