Kinja'd!!!

Got a free laptop the other week. No power supply. As it happens I found a 90w HP power supply when cleaning out a closet. HP Elitebook 8560w. 2nd-gen i7 (quad core 2.5ghz with HT and VT), 8GB RAM (2x 4gb sticks, two slots free), 350gb 7200rpm hard drive, 1080p display, full keyboard with keypad, I believe it has two internal drive bays with a RAID controller, and an NVidia Quadro 1000m graphics card that can somehow manage to run GTA V but is soon being replaced by the optional FirePro graphics card which supposedly has twice the gaming ability as well as the ability to run 6 monitors from a single DisplayPort.

Kinja'd!!!

Compared to my old Elitebook.

Kinja'd!!!

Heavy as balls. I’m kinda sad the battery only lasts a couple hours compared to the 5+ hours my smaller, slightly less powerful Elitebook could get.

Dang! Congrats.

So.... I just got a new laptop recently, too, and I’ve been on the fence about something. Yay or nay to sticker bombing it? I mean, not a TON of ‘em, but a couple. Maybe a skin for the lid or something. What do you think? And are you gonna do anything to yours?

Free laptops are the best. A couple years ago I got a free iBook that was missing a charger and crashed booting. Got a charger on eBay and reinstalled the OS and gave it to my 7 year old to tinker with. Your score is a lot more modern and useful than mine. 2nd gen Cores are still decent. You should be able to get some good use out of that. Battery probably doesn’t last just because it’s a beast, but based on age it might be worth getting a new battery at some point.

Cool - those are nice machines. We used those for work several years ago, have been upgrading to the newer elitebooks the last couple years. They have been pretty bulletproof for us.

Heavy as balls yes, but my 8570w is the most solidly built thing I ever owned.

I’m not sure if you’re going to be very happy with the 90W charger, though. I heard some people even had the battery drain when connected to a 120W while running heavy programs. The original 150W chargers are so ridiculously expensive, though, so I understand the choice for a 90W.

Yeah, I’m sure the discrete graphics and tiny battery aren’t a great combination. I can get a secondary battery that is the size of the whole laptop and makes the thing about an inch thicker overall but gives me something stupid like 12 hours of battery life.

I do love the way these Elitebooks are made. Far, far better than the Latitudes I’ve had previously and I utterly adore the service panel on the bottom that just pops off without the need for any tools. Glorious. 4 RAM slots is pretty awesome and am I right in thinking I can stick 2 hard drives in this thing without any aftermarket CD-bay caddies or anything?

I’ve never really kept a laptop long enough to consider stickerbombing it, honestly. Skins can be cool. Get a custom printed vinyl skin that matches your desktop wallpaper for an interesting effect :P

Yes they are super maintenance friendly and solid as a rock, which is why there are still tons of them around at my university. The amount of beating they can take is absurd, I don’t advice being careless with it, but I’ve seen quite a few of them being dropped, most of the time only leading to a small ding.

As far as I know you do need a CD-bay caddy to install a second HDD/SSD, or at least that is what everyone, some 10+ people, I know that has installed an extra HDD/SSD into a 8560w or 8570w has done.

Damn good deal those are still several hundred bucks used on eBay. I almost bought one last year but ended up with a pavilion 15 with an nvidia 960m. Works well but not workstation class like the elitebook. Jealous!

Hit me up if you want the 150w adapter. Cost of shipping and its yours. I still have one left over from an 8460p i sold. You probably want get full graphics performance with the 90w...especially if you get the Radeon. My pavilion won’t without its 130w.

Hmm... that’s an interesting point with the power adapter. Got a way I can contact you off oppo?

Nice! I got a new one, too. Actually the first new laptop I’ve gotten for myself, and the first one I’ve spent more than $50 for. I went to the Microsoft Store to check out the new Surface Laptop, and left with a Dell Inspiron i5565 Signature Edition, and used Bing Search points to offset the sales tax.

Two or three of them aren’t really helpful reviews, but reading the others makes it seem OK. I got my wife its direct predecessor last year or so and it’s held up well. This one has a better processor, even more RAM, and discrete graphics, and is gray instead of silver.
