Kinja'd!!!

...but my new rear transmission mount just showed up and now I can’t concentrate because I want to go install it.

This being the third mount since I bought the car two Summers ago, hopefully it will solve the the problem without introducing new ones.

I seem to remember something about the Mazda 3 eating engine and transmission mounts like they were made of candy.

Not quite. It’s just that, of the three mounts, one wears out quickly and one never really did its job in the first place. I already swapped out the short-lived, hydraulic, passenger-side engine mount for a solid-rubber clone that’s performed flawlessly for the last 30K miles.

The RTM pictured above is going to replace the one that’s terrible at its job. The new part was originally discovered by Focus ST owners because early STs had the same terrible engine mounts as the Mazda3. This RTM is from the electric Focus and was used by ST owners who didn’t want to rattle their teeth out with one of the aftermarket poly alternatives (I tried one, it was awful). Interestingly, two years into production, Ford replaced the original ST RTM with the E-Focus part and now every new ST ships with it.

You have one of the current gen 3s? I know the first generations were pretty bad.

No, first gen. Mine’s a 2006. Eleven years later (13 if you’re counting from the first model year of that generation 3), the Focus is still using the same basic mounts (and engines).

Interesting. I thought the 3 was based on the earlier Focus and wasn’t similar to the current generation of Focus.

The first-gen 3s were both based on the Euro-market Mk2 Focus (C1-platform). The second-gen 3s are a hybrid of Mk2 (C1) and Mk3 (Global C) Focus. And the Mk3 Focus is actually on the third generation of the same platform that the Mk1 was built on (C -> C1 -> Global C). I test drove a 15 Focus Titanium last year and it felt just like a higher trim level of my car.

As far as I know, the third-gen 3s are completely unrelated to any Focus or previous-generation 3s.

I did my engine mounts last fall. Really didn’t help the vibration thing in my Focus, at all. I did have the fortune of snapping the bolt when I was trying to install the rear mount, which looked a little less stout than what you are holding in your hand.

I’ve replaced all of the mounts in mine already (OEM left, ROCA right, JBR rear), I just wasn’t satisfied with the JBR mount I used in the rear. It did a great job of keeping the engine in place, but the NVH was so bad that the CD player would skip every time I launched, no matter how gently I did so. Been running the stock mount filled with polyurethane caulk for about a year now and that’s isn’t cutting it either.

This new one is off the current Focus Electric/ST and is supposed to be stiffer than my stock mount, but more compliant than the poly aftermarket alternatives. The reviews seem consistent with the ROCA mount, which I’m completely satisfied with, so I’m hopeful for this one.

That’s the mount I have to n my C30. The stock mount is way too soft. The eFocus mount introduced a bit of vibration, but it may shifting gears much smoother.
