I wonder what is going on with the 80" (or 86"?).

With those wheels and tyres I imagine it is not standard at all.

This brings to mind that time that my dad *almost* bought a IIB at an auction for under a grand.

Not sure, my guess is newer Series hubs for lack of replacements? Idk, either way... gib.

Awesome!

(I’m trying very hard to suppress the urge to make reliability joke)

How much does he regret that choice? Probably a lot, I think it’s a lot.

The most reliable unreliable vehicle you’ll ever own.

Well, the rear hubs are stock (and not particularly strong), and I think the front ones are simply old-style selectable ones. But the wheels are very wide (maybe from a 1-ton?); the tyres seem to be oversize too.

Definitely desirable.

It wasn’t actually a “choice” thing so much as “I can’t bid any more”. They started the bidding on it, my dad was the only one bidding, they “unstarted” the bidding, and then tried again ten minutes later... with a guy who’d been wandering around and hadn’t even looked at the thing pushing it over $700 (as the only other bidder), and my dad had to pull out.

It was mostly just the cab and axles- the chassis riders and other hardware would have needed transfer to a fresh and modified-for-FC 109 chassis, and it was missing the trans, IIRC. Seem to recall it had a 2.6 of unknown condition in it. Still, I think the guy who bought it for the lulz ended up reselling it somewhere around here. I should ask Sean where it finally ended up - he should know.

The event was the closing up shop auction of Leroy Harrell, who had been the biggest importer of series Rovers through the ‘60s and ‘70s in WNC and had continued to service and resell used ones for years afterward - I think it was around ‘98 or so.

We’d already cleaned up on heater cores, door spares, and a whole bunch of other random things - the only vehicles that hadn’t been sold yet were a very ragged 86 with missing parts and that IIB. I know Land Rover of Asheville got the I.

IIRC the track width on newer series axles are wider than the 80", my guess is that he stuck a pair of Series IIa axles underneath there.

Ah, that sucks but such is life I guess. If I had the funds and time for a IIb it would be sitting in my driveway leaking lol.

I don’t know.

Here’s a better look at the front hub.

Nice old dirt pic.

Taken back in 2009, looking at the colour and indicators next to the side lights, before a restoration.

From the looks of it, I think it’s an newer Series axle but either way.

See the centre of the rear wheel, with no little conical aluminium hubcap? That’s because it is an original (semi-floating) Series 1 halfshaft. The hub is part of the halfshaft; Series II and later had fully-floating halfshafts with little conical hubcaps, same as in the front axle. And the hub was a separate part.

I happen to own a 86" series 1. I realise now five years ago I must have bought one of the very last sets of Series 1 rear halfshafts...

I can’t tell whether the front axle is a series I or later, but the wheels themselves are very wide, either from a 1-ton or a 109 SW or similar.

Interesting pictures. So the owner must have fitted a Perkins diesel engine (otherwise, why the Perkins badge on the radiator grille?).

06/16/2017 at 16:47, STARS: 0

The Perkins engine if I recall was a common engine swap, I guess it still may be.

Yup. The first Series 1 I tried to buy (an 88" with hardtop!) had been fitted with a Perkins engine.

That car died in a scrapyard because the people selling it got greedy and decided to up the agreed price at the very last minute.

Then the scrappy did not even know what an effing Series 1 was so it was crushed.

I still get bitter when I think about it.

I used to be heavy into the Land Rover stuff but then in the last 15 years I stopped keeping up with them.

I’d still have a few classics if I had the money and the space.

I missed the opportunity 17 or so years ago at a classic car and steam engine meet when I saw a 1952 Bronze Green Series I 80" with canvas tilt for sale. It was being sold by the son or a recently dead farmer and he had it listed as a ‘Mark 1 Land Rover’. He had it for sale for less than £1,000. I really should of borrowed the money as I could of sold it to the U.S. for a good £20,000 profit at the time. It was in such good condition too.

Well, I hope to be able to finish mine some day. Chassis done, axles done, suspension done, steering done, gearbox and transfer case done. Engine is “as bought” (not the one which came with the car, which was a diesel of less than proper origin). And then there is the body, which ain’t that complicated, but there is no top and no hoops...

I suppose I could sell it but that would be goodbye to ever being again the owner of an S1.

There is loads of support out there for Landies.

So all you need is the cash and the time, oh and a lot of patience and determination.
