It’s becoming harder and harder to remember (or imagine) a world without a united Germany, but it could have ended so tragically different.

Let’s not forget that Kohl groomed Angela Merkel to be a first-line politician, but when it was discovered he had made some terrible mistakes, she felt no compunction in feeding him to the lions; in fact, she became one of her harshest critics.

About ten years ago, a friend of mine wrote for a German newspaper. I called during a particularly slow late shift: “Hey mate, watcha doin’?” “Nothing much, just updating Kohl’s obituary.” “But he’s still...” “Yeah, but it can’t be that long and we like to have them ready just in case.”

Fact: TV networks, newspapers and radio stations have tons of ready-made obituaries. In the case of TV and radio they even know the exact amount of time they are going to devote to each person (provided of course they die of natural causes and the way they die is not a news item itself).

I literally just bought a bathing suit at his store yesterday. As I walked in, I thought “ does anyone even remember Helmut Kohl? ” Seriously.
This guy was a fixture of my childhood and world events, especially around the Cold War’s end. RIP.
