Interviewed the CEO for the company I work for today. Pretty important dude, its a 34,000 person organization and generally considered a top health system in the nation. Pay is probably in the 3-5 mil. a year range. So whats a guy like that do with his precious time off?

He loads his family into his Xterra, hitches up the off road trailer (like pictured) that his wife had built and heads off into the Utah backcountry with his mountain bike. He brought his roof top tent with him from Dubai where he would do the same thing there.

Kinja'd!!!

Mad props.

SIDE NOTE: I’ve been listening in on my new HAM radio for a little while and I’ve come to the following conclusion about conversations on the network:

Do you have a HAM? I also have a HAM...lets talk HAM things. Did you know you can HAM this way?

That being said, I was listening in on conversations 250 miles away on a $50 handheld receiver that looks like a cheapie FRS radio so thats pretty cool.

Can’t seem to get a consistent signal on account of his rapid spinning in his grave.

I heard something the other day. No idea if it is true. Can you really use a Ham radio to talk to the ISS sometimes? Have you heard about this?

Yeah you can. They have a transponder on it and you can either talk to the station or bounce off of it. The trouble is that the station isn’t geostationary so its not in the same place twice and it moves across the sky and out of range pretty fast. The other consequence of this is that you need a computer to be able to calculate the doppler shift in order for your signal to modulate the changing frequency as it rapidly approaches and departs your line of sight. Still, very interesting [nerdy] stuff.

Yeah i heard it could be pretty complicated to do, but the fact that it CAN be done is very cool.

“10m is pretty crappy today.. 40 is good though.” -overhead at every radio club meeting everywhere. I go a few times a year - usually to pay dues or when they get new repeaters to play with, but they meet every month in person, to talk about how the bands are for talking to each other at home..

Fun to have an Expo CEO, just don’t call it a datsun..

It actually is cool. I know its not most people’s cup of tea but the idea of having access like this is pretty neat to me.

I mean, sometimes there are interesting conversations about river guides or neighbor squabbles and such but its literally mostly just HAM talk. Just listening for now until I can get a handle on good etiquette.
