Launch!

On the way in this morning I noticed a 991 in the turning lane next to me that was getting ready to cut me off and go straight to enter the highway as soon as the light goes green. “I wonder if he knows how to use launch mode” I thought as I set the S3 up for launch. He didn’t...

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve been driving the Ranger to work for the past few weeks because the S3 has been #3 in my one lane driveway. Also because I’m forced to behave better in the Ranger which is good for commuting. So maybe it’s the contrast, but I swear the S3 is the quickest car I have owned. My E90 had well over 100 more horsepower but never “felt” that fast even though the speedo said otherwise. Every time I punch it in the S3 I’m like

Happy Friday!

Boost almost always feels faster than N/A.

This is what happens to me even though I’ve got nowhere near the speed... I just turn into a giggling idiot.

Bearing that in mind I find it odd that when I drove a friend’s Golf R, I tried launch control and my reaction was more “wow that was cooooool... meh I’m over it”

I agree and the M3 has nearly the same lb-ft of torque, so you really don’t feel it in that car until you’re up in the top of the rev range.

That’s low end torque for you!

My dad’s 04 Z71 is not an agile vehicle but mashing the gas pedal on the 5.3 produces great sounds.

Mine isn’t either... though I’d argue it’s more agile than you’d expect. But dat noise and kidney punch from the low end... mmmmm.

One of my favorite things though is actually the way it doesn’t need to downshift all the time. Just the way it starts growling and hanging onto the higher gear when you load it up is every bit as intoxicating as flooring it. I will literally growl back and burst into a fit of giggles.

The low end Corvette like grunt is what I like about it. Damn thing just pulls. A vortec 350 would always sound like it was going to explode at 5000 rpm, the gen 3 blocks don’t. It understeers like a pig. I found out that one time I borrowed it and took an off ramp too happily. I was used to the e38 being neutral on those ramps.

I’m surprised at how neutral my truck is actually. Go in too hot on the wrong bend and you’ll be hitting the far curb, but as soon as you’ve got the initial turn-in it’ the back, if anything, that wants to go. But you can build speed all the way through most corners without issues.

But for a REAL surprise you can’t beat one of these:

Kinja'd!!!

6.0 Express 15-passenger, 3500. Shockingly quick (more “I didn’t expect to have to fight for that” than “quick”, but still). And you could stick her in here at 75km/h and build up to 120km/h by the ramp exit*... granted it was sliding by that point, but no understeer or oversteer—4 wheel drift to the side. It was balanced nicely but the tires couldn’t hack it anymore :)

*No I was not driving... this dude was an animal behind the wheel. Still impressive

I say that about my Mustang and STi, and every time i switch cars i swear the others faster. The mustangs low end makes the STi feel like it can’t get off the line without dumping the clutch....but The STi’s top end feels like it will never stop pulling where the mustangs is starting to give up before 5000rpms.....maybe this is why all v8s should have Turbos best of all worlds.

AWD means you can give it more off the line than you could with RWD.

The STi’s top end is out of control, it gets to xxx way too quickly lol.

I didn’t notice if the 911 was AWD or not. The Audi actually does not feel as fast as it is of the line, the most noticeable is from 30mph on

I was talking about your comparison between the feel of the S3 and the feel of the E90.

Yeah the short gears really go quickly, I guess that why they all come with a shift indicator from factory.

I’ve told this story before on here, but I bought an 04' STi and I let my father drive it. Afterward he said, “If you go more than a week without a speeding ticket, I will make your first payment.” I made that payment, 5 days.

My mom was visiting one spring and I needed to get my winter tires swamped, and she offered to pick up the car for me. On the way home she was trying to figure out if it made that “whooshing” noise in every gear.....She ended up with a ticket for going 60mph in our neighborhood(a 25mph). It was pretty damn funny....especially because the cop thought he finally got me. She had a Boxster S (w/6speed) so she was used to quick cars.
