Kinja'd!!!

This thing sits and barely gets driven. When I bought it, I worked maybe 40 hours a week. Now I wake up at 5 or 6am and get home at around 6pm. I’m working Saturdays more frequently. Add in everything around the house, social obligations, family, etc., and this car is so far down the list of properties it’s just wrong.

It’s need all this work that I’m 1) not qualified to do, 2) Don’t have time to do, and 3) don’t know if it’s worth paying to get done. This is a 34 year old rusty box. A nicer one mind you, but it is what it is.

Once I got into parts alone — and the cost of the goddamned special tools I don’t own — I’m like, “Christ, may as well just have someone else do it.” Well. My last mechanic was caught embezzling money, and I haven’t found anyone since then I trust (also shows I’m not exactly savvy picking mechanics). I’ve had two local shops refuse to work on my car because it’s so old (:/...) but admittedly haven’t been searching that hard lately because — again — business hours have long passed since I clocked out.

Conversely, buying another car would be much more expensive than fixing this one... And due to certain recent personal-life developments, my dream of my first ever “nice” car no longer feel like their in the cards... I need a real daily driver. The pickup is absolutely not a daily driver, unless I want to start throwing money at it instead (I don’t!).

Well anyway. Just been a bit down lately. But I kept it car-related! I legitimately love the shoebox and don’t want to get rid of it, but I’m at a crossroads. Or really, I’m in purgatory. I don’t want to throw money I don’t really have into a fire, but turning around and buying a $7k T100, or a 13k E91 is not an option at the moment.

What does it need really? It can’t be that complicated to fix.

I feel you, man. Lately I’ve been thinking about selling everything and just getting another Toyota truck or 4Runner to daily. Nice cars and projects are not a thing that gets to happen now. What does the Tercel need?

I know how you feel. In my last two years in NC, my job gradually shifted from 8am-5pm to 8am-8pm and going in on weekends to get caught up. Of course it was salaried so no overtime pay. It’s draining. I had a hard time finding the energy just to go grocery shopping or cook after work. When I wasn’t working on weekends, I was just so desperate to rest and relax that I was not getting anything done. I wish I could tell you that it got better, and it did, but only after I quit. My new job is strictly 8-5 with an hour lunch, and my boss kicks me out if I’m still there by 5:10. The shorter work day, combined with a pay raise and a 2 car garage make me feel like a new man. I hope you’re able to find some balance in your life. If you do, you’ll find time for things like the Tercel. (PS I’m still jealous because I live in the land of rust and we can’t have nice things like your Tercel.)

Keep it! Every old car needs money. The satisfaction of bringing a car from life support is great. I used to daily the 740il before the joop yj. Did I think about junking the e38 most of the time? Yes but I didn’t. I don’t see that many e38s on the road and the junkyard inventory of them is becoming less. I’ve mothballed it because it needs a fistful of dollars but I won’t give up on it. Life is too short, so I live the life of unreliable euro barges and Oregon trail ox cart suspension jeeps. In summary the lunchbox is an Oppo favorite and don’t sell it.

I know this. With my 2 cars parked for years leaving them on the back burner. At least I got two cool cars.

I’m afraid my DD may blow the head gasket sometime, and then I’d be screwed.

The great thing about cars is that they don’t take sitting in the back for a few months personally.

Rack and pinion, tie rod ends, both CV, ball joints. Those are the immediate “needs,” there’s plenty more to go.

You’ll regret it if you get rid of it, so don’t do that! I understand, though. I’d like to have a fun toy type car to tinker with but with work and taking care of the house and new fatherhood, I have zero extra time (or money). It blows. So, my 6 gets driven daily as it was bought to do and my little S10 just sits.

Heh. My dad heard the same “theory” from his employer back in the late ‘80s when they gave him an S-10 for work. He quickly put it to work carrying the materials he needed to build his house. Do you have any idea what an S-10 looks like when it’s loaded with a yard of sand? We do. Wheelies for days.

You’ll be alright buddy. Don’t do anything crazy. We’re quickly approaching the nice days of the year when you can wrench until 9 pm.

Also I know an all Japanese and Euro mechanic that would be happy to look at it.

Yeah that’s fair. I’ll warn you that having a modernish and practical daily might make you feel uninteresting, even though you know it makes sense and is good. I find myself missing the days of daily driving old BMWs

I started my Lincoln for the first time in 3 months yesterday. It’s FILTHY. The clear coat failure accentuates the dirt and pollen buildup. I parked it due to a crack inbthe windshield that appeared out of nowhere after a cold night. Mechanically the car is sound, but the looks are ling in the tooth. I’m debating on just selling it to someone who can afford to put more time towards it.

The Mustang is probably angry with me as well. Garage kept and pristine, it has been driven approximately 170 miles so far in 2017......

I hate this year so far....

On a good note out 2 commuters are tip top and my Cougar has been getting driven a bit more than the last few years.

I’ve been feeling the same about the Niva lately. Difference is I’m more than capable of doing the work needed (easily a whole day just to change a $0.90 seal) but I really only have the street to work on it (I suspect the municipality might have something to say about dropping the transmission out there), and just haven’t been motivated much. I took it for a 20km drive out to a party a few weeks back, which motivated me a little, but also made me realize I haven’t put gas in it since February... And it only gets 200 miles out of a tank.
