Those are two different questions.

Most convient is one that’s a carrier, too, and snaps into a base that stays in the car. You can buy multiple bases for multiple cars but use the same carrier. They’re only good to about 25lbs or so, though.

Longest lasting, we’ll there’s several that can go from infant to forward to booster and be the only car seat they need until they’re ten. But: big, bulky, harder to move, not transportable.

Graco makes both styles and they’re generally in the mid-100s range up to about $200. I personally used one of the carrier ones until my son was about 20ish months, then switched to a forward-facing only seat.

Diono Radian will cover them for the rest of their car seat days after the infant seat.

Super nice offer, but why not go carseat shopping with them? I say that because whatever they buy they should be trying out in their car to make sure it fits and works..

We used Gracos because they were easy to find, reasonably affordable, and worked with the stroller and other bases we had. When they are little it’s worth it’s weight in gold to be able to lift the whole seat out and carry the sleeping little one inside.

My son is in a booster and daughter is just getting ready to switch into hers. Two rigs and two kids means we will be buying our sixth (and last) kid seat..

Best for child car seat , different for infant ones. Depends on if you want a carrier for immediate use or as the kid starts to grow. Consumer Report rates Chicco Keyfit as best for infant type.

Our 8 month old hangs out in a Chicco Keyfit 30 carrier style rear facing seat, that clips into the stroller and such things.

Our toddler has a Recaro front seat in my car and a Britax my parents bought us in the Mrs. Car. Having installed both I’m getting more Recaros when the little one outgrows her rearfacing seat.

Note: The Recaro that converts from rear to front facing is huge and may not fit in your car, we have the front facing only that turns into a booster seat.

Best bet is to extend the offer and let them choose. There are a number of variables and since safety is of the utmost concern, it’ll be best if they are able to choose the seat that satisfies all of their requirements.

Source: I’m a parent and this is how I’d want it to happen.

For infants, we used a Graco seat that has a base that remains in the car while the baby carrier can be removed to carry babby around. Super convenient. When the kids got bigger, we transitioned to a Britax seat (with belts properly adjusted, the large Britax seat—and others—will also hold a newborn). Modern LATCH systems make it a snap to install, and we were able to use it on airplane trips. If your brother plans on doing a lot of flying with babby, make sure the seat is FAA certified. Even then, some flight attendants will give you shit about it. But it’s better than holding babby for the whole flight. OTOH, schlepping a giant car seat through the airport is a major PITA, and we did it with twins. But having the car seat on the plane is more comfortable for babby, and increases the chances that babby will sleep on the flight.

We went with Graco because their nicer models are as good as the expensive brands, but way more affordable. Go with one that is also a carrier, but don’t worry about having one that can go the distance. Get a good one for the little baby, and then one that fits better when he/she gets older.

Just put a dog crate in the back of your pickup. They’ll be fine.

my advice from experience:

we bought the fully modular fanciest ones for the wife’s car. they go backwards and forwards (and probably upsidedown and whatever) but they are massive, and heavy and annoying.

For my car we bought just the backwards facing kind, then later bought forward facing ones. I thought it was better. Not being so modular thye were smaller while offering the same crash rating.

Also, I now have recaro (branded) booster seats now that the kids are older, so that makes me feel like a racer and that’s important.
