‘98-03 Town Car? The last model had some safety improvements, but I don’t think even the high mileage ones are down to $2500 yet.

The one you don’t end up crashing in. Just buy something decent sized and without rust and you’ll be fine.

IIRC the Panthers are mediocre at side impact crashes given their ancient underpinnings. I’d guess you’d do better with a more modern design.

Did fine from the front where the miles of hood provide lots of room to dissipate energy, but less well elsewhere.

Rating or actual safest? If the latter an old Suburban or Expedition will do you; just don’t hit something your size or that’s permanently affixed.

I’m pretty sure the 1st gen New Beetle did pretty well in crash tests, but that was before they started doing the small overlap tests. I’d guess there are some of those in that price range, but they probably have the sludge monster 1.8T.

Volvo s60 is probably nearly as good as the aurora but just way better in every other way. I prefer the s70 and 850 though. Can be had very clean for under $2500 and if you get a GLT or T5 you get a sweet 5 cylinder with a healthy turbo.

Mine was $3500 with 140k miles GLT AWD and it was super clean, but I got rear ended hard after one month of ownership and it was totaled. I didnt feel a thing though, which is impressive for such a small and light car (3100 lbs). Runs about 6.3 seconds 0-60 which was really quick back in 1998. Mine was Identical to this picture.

A W140 S320 Mercedes all day long, you can even get a 1996 which is the year they got side curtain airbags. It’s also too heavy for the straight six to move it fast enough to cause a serious collision.
