Like, a real live Excel. Not a cardboard cutout or a life-size model. And it wasn’t just real but impossibly clean too. No visible rust or damage.

You guys didn’t get many Excels? We got plenty, but mostly the newer bubblier generation. Many of those had “Sportz” written on the side for some reason (including this one). Very rewarding to see.

We got plenty of the first two generations of Excels (and the one in your picture that was the Accent here), but they all broke down and/or rusted away mostly.

Those were sold as the first-gen Hyundai Accent here in Canada!

Funny story, I have an acquaintance from High School who was always a bit of a joker. He apparently now has a Hyundai Excel of the generation before the one you posted (X1) in sedan form that he restored. :P

People like to harp on their quality, but he DDs it year-round other than the winter (when he stores it) and it hasn’t let him down once!

There were tons of them, they’re the car that established Hyundai in the US market. They did that however, by being as cheap as possible and now there’s almost none left.

It’s a time honored strategy. Win on price and a trendy design, then slowly move towards quality until people recognize you as a real brand. Japan did it, Korea is just on the tail end, and China is next.
