Kinja'd!!!

I was on my lunch and I saw a lot of smoke. Turns out it was coming from the exhaust of this late model, last gen to be exact 550i. When it took off even more smoke came out of the exhaust. I found it weird because the car was pretty nice. It just had an embarrassing amount of smoke coming out of the back:

Kinja'd!!!

Could it be running too rich? Or does the V8 in this gen of 5 Series have problems to make it smoke like this?

Valve stem issues. N62s and n63s eat oil.

I see this a bit on old x45 badged cars. As was mentioned, they can become oil burners.

So soon though? This 5 Series looked to be at most only 2-3 years old. I know the 7 Series can, so I kind of assumed the 5 would too since it shares the same V8.

The BMW N63 V8 places the turbos between the cylinder heads.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s supposed to be for efficiency or something but the turbos run a lot hotter than turbos that hang off the exhaust manifolds, so the N63 tends to have oil consumption problems.

It seems like in their engineering they were thinking one sided. I bet its pain to live with one of these.

That body style has been around since 2011.

I rented a F10/F11 5er in Germany in 2010, so it might not be so new. I know CA plates are sequential and can be dated, but it wouldn’t matter if the car came from elsewhere.

I seem to see it most on 2005 era 645s.

The N62/3 is a horrible engine, in every guise, turbo or not. Valve guides on the early ones, ring sealing issues, PCV failures, turbos, injectors, timing chain guides... you could not pay me to own one of those. That could be a 6 year old car too.

N62s and n63s eat oil souls.

I almost went for a 2010 7 Series a few months back until I was talked out of it buy all of those issues from you guys on here and the forums. How people put up with it I’ll never get. The BMW badge blinds some to put up with the problems just to say they drive a BMW.

The m62b44tu is reliable compared to these two. And the b44tu had vanos, shitty timing chain guides, and a electronic thermostat. M60 and m62 non vanos are reliable some what.

Good move passing on it, the F01 7 Series is an awful car. I’ve been a lifelong BMW devotee and have been a Euro car tech for most of my life, and I’ll probably never own a BMW newer than my ‘03.

I had this happen on my SHO when my turbo impeller (I still owe Oppo pictures) blew out of the turbo to get lodged in my catalytic converter. So. Much. White. Smoke. But I was just thrilled to learn that at least it wasn’t my head gasket.

Engineering was thinking that as long as the part runs okay for 4 years from the install date, that’s all they care.

They just aren’t worth it anymore. I’ve had BMW techs tell me this to my face. Any of the newer ones I’ve been told are garbage quality wise. I constantly keep hearing don’t own one off lease. And between the problems, and the maintenance costs that seem to be expensive for no other reason than to be expensive, I’ll never buy a BMW.

The M62 is a glorious engine compared to any N-series. Timing chain guides, yeah, but do them every 100k and keep on truckin’. We’ve only had to pull the heads off of one, and that got comprehensively cooked when the client ignored the temp gauge after losing coolant. Hard to kill.

Noisy engine too and love the fact that the m62 I have takes 15w40. It will limp home on a bad maf and intake gaskets while the N63 will just give up and cook a turbo.

Lighter smoke is generally an indicator of burning coolant but it could also be burning a small amount of oil.

Consider me an independent BMW tech telling it to your face, because I wholeheartedly agree. I tell customers to get rid of their cars on a regular basis. It’s not in my best interest to do so, but it’s what they need to hear because the damn things will bankrupt them.

That was just the pic I snapped. It was way more smoke than whats shown.

Thanks for telling me this. I’ve been talking my mom out of BMW’s and shes slowly starting to agree. She went from an 07 325i (which outside of needing rear brakes replaced for over$600 and a damn marine sized battery for $500) to a 6 Series Gran Coupe. She can afford the upkeep, but she doesn’t want to keep paying.

Probably oil then. Sucks to be them as it’s probably going to get really expensive.

A 2014 X5 35iXdrivethingy was at the auction I went to. When the only bid was 9k and everyone chortled at the 14k reserve announcement it makes you wonder.

Did you take it to the dealer and they want $700?

I had my rear brakes replaced on my F30 and it was under $500. Canadian.

I’d definitely look into indie shops if you’re out of warranty. They generally do better at giving a crap about things and fairer with prices.
