I read your exchange with Jkm7680 over on the thread that I started about Steve Scalise. I was active Army from ‘84 to ‘90, and I spent 3 years in Louisiana, and that is a curious place.

I’ve had a couple of exchanges with Jkm and he has a tendency to sometimes come in hot and judgmental. When I read your remarks I thought you strayed slightly over the line of not being a dick, but I accept that Scalise is probably someone to stir up feelings in fair-mined folk. That particular mod is the least impressive of the lot and should have stayed out of it. It’s not like you and jkm were going to do pistols at dawn or something.

You’re in the Bay Area? I am as well. Wanna get a Starbucks sometime?

I haven’t read if he wrote anything, I am pretty busy today, on my phone only. I just get tired of people, especially when I’m busy, I hear so much crap from people who don’t have a clue here. Then I have to put up with clueless tech people. I am in the Bay Area but I work on shows here and other places, I don’t have a regular schedule so it makes planning anything hard. Even when the Z is all together I usually miss C&C. I just did Apple wwdc and then went right into a thing at Fort Mason. I have a Salesforce show now. I told Mr Sunchaser I would go for a drive or something when the Z is back together if I can plan ahead for when he’s around. I generally don’t hang out with anyone but my wife or dog but I like to go out for a drive and I will talk to oppos, generally.

Just putting it out there. I’ve met a few very interesting people on Oppo.

I am a pretty unusual person, and when I even start to talk about all the stuff I’ve been through people generally think I’m crazy or just making it all up. So I now try to just be a normal Joe at work. I was a health worker in Paraguay during the summer in High School, I was a climber and got onto Himalayan expeditions through a big shit I knew at a climbing gym, I took a semester off in college for Annapurna I, I was a Marine and then was poached with another guy to do a very similar job with the DIA, working with US and other Royal Marines etc... I have been through two hospitalizations during that time, seen some things I don’t even know how to bring up to civilians, sometimes I just get upset, I try to just leave it alone but stupid people annoy me haha. I’m pissed I didn’t have the sense to go in the Coast Guard or become a forest ranger or something, I was so busy doing things I didn’t think about or know what I really wanted for the next thirty years! Since I have been back in the real world I find it very hard to have any kind of conversations with the general population in my union. We have a few cool people that I try to work with, but we have others with zero knowledge about the world, or anything, and they only talk about sports teams with the Teamsters. I think we need a Bay Area Oppo cruise, I know some good roads in Marin etc.. there are some roads I’ve never been out to that might be good. I just don’t know if I can plan anything too far in advance, my schedule can change twice in a day. I just got home, we wrapped stuff up faster than I thought today. I am watching Le Mans a bit.

I’d love to meet you. I reached out this time because your comments on that other thread made you sound interesting. Let’s stay in touch here, and maybe an Oppo-tunity (I made a play on words!) will present itself.

What’s your age?

I’m 52 and I teach middle school in the East Bay. I was active Army ‘84-90 and being in the military was a lot easier than it is now. Cake walk easy. Then AFRES from something like ‘95-00. I have many times wished I’d joined the USMC instead of the Army, but I wouldn’t have met the woman I’m married to these 28 years and that would be no bueno . As a teacher I am (somewhat) forced to belong to a union and I see unions as the primary cause of what’s wrong with public education in the United States.

Peace!

Well I’m 38, I was supposed to fly like my dad but they said there were no slots so I was put in intel. I ended up with recon doing targeting intel so I wasn’t sitting around in an office. I used to fly through Manas in Kyrgyzstan a lot. Then myself and another guy were trained on something the DIA wanted to use more and we were asked if we wanted to switch. We ended up working will all kinds of Marines anyway and they knew I was one too so it was easier. But after a while I had enough and we went back to Hawaii before eventually coming here where some of my family is. As for work, I’m not in that kind of union, it’s the sign and display union. I am mainly a rigger/graphics so I hang things in the air for shows or cover a building in graphics. Some people don’t like heights or driving big lifts around busy places but I think it’s kind of fun. We need unions for our work or they would screw over all the workers and take away benefits. I can never make anyone promises since my union boss and company boss tell me where to go and not many people can rig so we tend to be busy, or just can’t say for sure when we will be off. My wife loves that. I wouldn’t have met my wife in Japan unless I had that job either so that’s a plus, and I love going there. But I will try to get to a Cars and Coffee or something, I think it’s the first Sunday of every month for the Marin one, the Z should be done soon, hopefully I can get out there.
