as part of getting my architectural licence I have to do community service - 80 hrs

My office is the architect for a new kitchen at a local food pantry. Part of the project was a teaching table to teach kids nutrition and cooking. I’m volunteerring my time to build the table.

My first project at our new house (in 2008) was to wire speakers all over the house while there was nothing in it. That way we always had music anywhere we were working. This is before the days of good portable bluetooth speakers.... but it also allows us to have the same thing playing all over the place, like a baseball game from the TV or whatever.

Then we knocked down a wall.

I’m so glad to hear that we’ve started pre-emptively sentencing architects to community service.

We’ve chatted about licensing before. My wife has everything finished but the tests. She is supposed to finish before the end of the year or she will be forced into the new testing scheme and will have to start over. There was a plan in place, but life happened and derailed the plan. Now we are entering emergency mode. We are talking about her quitting her job so she can focus on her exams full-time until she finishes. We have to check the budget before she pulls the trigger, but I see us having to tighten up our belts and hunker down for the next six months. Fortunately, we are good at surviving on beans and rice.

No fantasies about new toys until next year.

I have the community service and the code&contract test left. she should take a look at the exams and how they cross over to the new format. There are certain exams that overlap. I had considered going into the new format which I’ve heard is easier (less sucky) but with the 2 remaining exams I had at the time, I would have had to take 3 of the new ones. I’m pretty sure the exams carry over to some extent so that she isn’t starting from scratch.

She’s done the comparison between the exams she’s taken, the exams she would have to take, and the other requirements she would have to fulfill to meet the new requirements. She came to the conclusion that she needs to focus on the remaining exams in her current plan.

I think it will all work out well. She is burned out in her current job and needs a change of pace. Part of her motivation is due to pay. In nine years, she’s had exactly one 4% pay increase. When they gave the pay increase, they doubled the health insurance premiums and moved to a plan with higher out-of-pocket costs. Overall, she’s making less than she did in her first job out of grad school.

Ugh. I wish you the best of luck!

Then again, my wife quit to raise kids....

Thanks!

My wife took off enough time to stay home with our kids until they were both in school. It put her somewhat behind her peers in the workforce, but it was worth the sacrifice. Now we are trying to build up the funds to get the kids through college, then ourselves into retirement. We think the financial loss for the time off will come back to us in an increased salary for her next year. She’s already had several firms offer to take her away from her current job, but getting that license would put her in a better position to negotiate.

It’s great that she is willing to do that. So many kids are raised in daycare. I think raised by mom is so much better.

YES! Put them to work! We’re just getting to the point that the kids can do things without making them worse. At least the 4-y.o. can, such as watering the garden without killing the plants, shoveling the walkway (!), helping fold laundry...
