Kinja'd!!!

Is there any technical reason for idling a diesel in summer?

Mid-June,big diesel pickup truck at 8 in the morning and idling in the parking lot while owner is shopping..

Holding my nose to not get a sinus headache. Enough of it and I will.

I don’t know the complexities of how those work but I’m somewhat okay with what I would call a stock diesel fume.

This was more like mis-adjusted carnival ride stink.

Guess they love it.

In other news, free diesel pickup, have Uber drop you off at the store about 8am and then rapidly keep out of accurate firing distance during whatever you’re doing that I didn’t recommend. What’s a Jalopnik, officer, is that a Russian import?

J/K, we don’t have Uber around here.

IIRC, diesels don’t like being turned on and off frequently. So yes, depending on how long you’ll be gone, there is a reason to leave the idling.

A diesel at idle uses hardly any fuel since it is a compression-ignition engine. Once they are up to temp, they can effectively run on just air.

The other one that hasn’t been mentioned is letting it cool back down and keep oil circulating, I used to leave mine idling for 5-10 minutes after towing for an extended period of time.

They use plenty of fuel. We idle trucks for around 96 hours in a week, and they burn a few gallons over a few hours.

Diesel engines and Turbocharged anythings- if they have been working hard, let them idle for a few minutes before shutdown so the oil can cool it down. If you shut down a piping hot turbo you can cake some oil inside it. (and use synthetic oil in your turbocharged things)

The past tense was used because I sold the truck and went back to gas/naturally aspirated.
