I was visiting a friend the other day, and we saw this fancy car in a church parking lot. No idea on the make or model; I’m thinking maybe British? And possibly a kit car? Looks nice and fancy either way. Reminds me of Cruella de Vil.

Well... it’s got a Jaguar leaper and the plate says SS 100, so I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it’s an SS Jaguar 100. Awesome find!

I’m not sure if you are serious? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Jaguar_100

I do think it is likely a replica though.

SS Cars changed their name to Jaguar in the 1940s for... reasons.

I suppose you are being ironic (unless still somewhat impaired after your recent ailment)

Probably a Suffolk or something like that. That bodywork is glassfibre and the rear ends of the chassis... well.

Not to mention the, er, generic rear lights.

Not to mention the “generic” rear lights.

Well, I didn’t mean to suggest that it was an actual SS100. Zeon already said he thought it was a kit, so I thought that went without saying, especially because of the value of a real one.

Kit replica as others have said. But am I right or merely clueless for suggesting that it’s built on an air cooled Beetle pan?

Never saw the plate until I posted this. While we were walking I spotted this car at least 500 feet away.

I’m serious. Not to knowledgeable about European cars, but I can spot a car with British influences.

I’m thinking it is a kit. Nice one though.

I think the rear “hump” is bigger than on the real one, so that would be my guess as well. Not much ventilation there, but it could be rigged up to get air flow over the engine somehow (or maybe they just live with bad cooling.) I guess there are any number of other potential rear-engine possibilities as well.

Ironic then. Happy to hear your brain hasn’t turned to mush.

Bloody jaguars (the mascot) – they are everywhere they shouldn’t nowadays.

Zeon was absolutely right about mentioning Cruella. Jags have been traditionally bought by cads; HMG did not start procuring them until

a) Rover stopped producing anything suitable, such as the lovely P5;

b) Royces became the conveyance of choice of a certain group of (foreign) industrialists and investors. (Also triggering the rebirth of Bentley as a proper prestige brand.)

(Oh dear, you do own a Jaguar, right? That’s fine, worry not. These clichés only apply really to the UK.)

That ship (my brain turning to mush) sailed a long time ago.

Fun fact: in the live action 101 Dalmatians Cruella drives a Panther De Ville, which used Jag engines.

Few things make me as angry as leapers where don’t belong. On modern XJs it just angers me, on the coupes, it makes me murderous.

I like to think I keep the caddish Jag owner stereotype alive

It’s a cool find, even as a replica.

Gazelle kit car built on Beetle running gear.

I have seen something similar to this, definitely rear engine beetle powered.   Though the front suspension doesn’t appear to be a trailing arm Beetle setup.

I hadn’tseen the hoodie on a Jaaaaaaaag called a leaper before. It makes sense. However, if the car is generally falling apart or badly rusted, wpuld that hoodie be called a leper?

[Enough with the bad jokes. I’ll go away now.]

Oh yes, definitely. Next to it was either a Plymouth roadrunner or gtx body. You can slightly see it in the 2nd pic.

With never seeming the original, the dimensions of the car looked ‘off’. I figured it was a kit simple on that.

They were more than a little off. That chrome edge on all the panel was to protect hands from the rough edges on the fiberglass. Most made back in the 70s up to the 90s the Gazelle kits were Mercedes replicas and the SS100 were Jaguar knockoffs. My wifes cousin had a well done Gazelle with a Ford drivetrain and it even had a/c. The car still lacked a lot in fit and finish. He had a very hard time selling it, there was little retained valued from the kit or chassis. The kit cars these days like the Porsche replicas have come a long way in quality. The SS100 was from Antique and Classic in NY. The Gazelles and Bugattis replicas were from CMC in Florida and used to be Fiberfab before that.
