Aren’t the even numbered models supposed to be coupes (2 Series, 4 Series), and odd numbered sedans (3 Series, 5 Series)? So they killed the 6 Series coupe to make a sedan with a kind-of not-really coupe-like back?

Yep, they are now contradicting their own convoluted nomenclature.

They already have a coupe:

“Coupe.” Aren’t they killing that 6 Series anyway?

This is replacing the 5 GT.
GT means tall hatchback version of a sedan in BMW speak.
In that regard, it’s a big improvement over its predecessor.

2-series from 2014:
They blew up that even coupes odd sedans/wagons thing a long time ago.

Yup. They’re dead to me anyway, they lost me at electronic water pumps and lack of manual transmissions offered.

YES!
That is exactly what I was thinking. It should be the 7er GT.

That’s because instead of that hideous thing, they turned it into an oversized and even sleeker 3 Series GT.
Not a fan of the use of the 6 Series on it, but I like the look of it.

Clearly. That thing should have been a 1 Series. Not bad looking, though.

BMW has been doing a pretty good job with the styling of their FWD cars overall. The new X1 looks pretty good too, though from a distance it is clearly just a transverse platform wagon.

Although, that thing was actually a short-wheelbase and decontented 7 series, not actually a 5 series.
Because BMW numbering makes any sense at all.

To be fair, the 4GC already contradicted it before. And I think Audi started it, with the A5 Sportback. (Or maybe the A7 before that?)

At least the 4GC is derived from a 4-series. The 6GT is derived from a 5-series!

Is the 4GC a 4-series or a 3-series, though?
And, I thought the 6 was effectively the 5 coupe?

Don’t try to make sense of BMW’s naming scheme. You are only going to give yourself a headache.

I was under the impression that BMW lost the plot quite some time ago.

Leave it to BMW to redesign something that already works well?
