The Castle AFB Museum in Atwater (Merced), California, has a B-36. I’d never even heard of the B-36 before I visited that museum and saw theirs sitting there and said, what the heck is that?

Also never heard of this movie until just now...

B-36: renowned for accidentally leaving a nuke in Canada.

Big MF. It was intended to bomb Japan from Hawaii. Random fact, though it was slower it could out turn a mig 15 at 50k feet.

That bomb was reportedly non-nuclear (entirely possible that’s a lie of course). If you really want to get Canada glowing, you need to call in the B-50: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950_Rivi%C3%A8re-du-Loup_B-50_nuclear_weapon_loss_incident

If I’m not mistaken, the B36's engines were supposed to be accessible via access corridors *while in flight*. The theory being that they could stay airborne for very, very extended periods given refueling.

That’s a clip from Strategic Air Command starring Jimmy Stewart (obviously). It’s a pretty hokey story, but it’s got some fantastic air-to-air shots of the B-36. It’s really nothing more than a propaganda film, but it’s worth fast forwarding through the story to get to the aerial shots. Another film along the same line is Bombers B-52 starring Karl Malden, and a young Natalie Wood. Again, a badly written Cold War propaganda film, but it’s got some great footage of the early B-52As.

The XC-99 is still around, but it’s in rough shape (as seen in the last picture), so it’s in storage at the Boneyard as there’s no money to restore it for Dayton.

There were tunnels in the wings, but they could only be accessed in flight for emergencies. To get into them the aircraft needed to be depressurized and kept below 10,000ft. They were used for maintenance access, and a crew member had to crawl through them as part of the preflight check. Here’s a write up from an engineer on the B36 and he talks at one point of getting a nasty burn when he climbed intimacy the wings to replaces fuses he failed to notice were the wrong ones on preflight, and they subsequently blew.

I knew someone that got his start in the Air Force on a B-36 maintenance crew. Even after hearing all the stories and jokes about reliability issues one concept really blew me away. They replaced all the spark plugs and wires after only 35 flight hours and specifically timed it so that was 2 training flights.

That’s 6 engines. Each engine had 28 cylinders. Each cylinder had 2 spark plugs. That’s 336 spark plugs and wires that need changed after only 35 operating hours!

Incase that doesn’t blow you away. One of the plugs like it used currently sells for $33.48. So a single set without wires: $11,249.28! (This price is based off the assumption that the wasp major uses the same plugs as the wasp and wasp jr)

And some really nice shots; they put some effort into it.

They carried the plugs to the line in 5-gallon buckets, from what I understand. Absolute madness.
