Kinja'd!!!

I was excited to try this American made (?) tire and the price point was very good. But they don’t last. They wear quickly and the rubber dries out and cracks on the sidewalls and in the tread grooves. Less than two years and very moderate climate.

Disappointing. Goodyear used to be a trustworthy brand.

I don’t need superlative tires for my Safari van, just good ones. So I ordered a set of 4 Kumho Solus tires from Amazon, free delivery, and I’ll get them mounted at a local tire shop. I’ve run several sets of Solus tires and they’ve been fine.

No luck with the treadwear warranty?

I just assume all tires are made in Brazil regardless of company.

How many miles did you put on them? Did you get them rotated regularly? (Walmart does provide free rotations). Other than the short tread life, how were they otherwise?

And it’s no surprise that cheap tires don’t last as long as the premium tires. Even though it’s made by Goodyear, it’s still made to a low price point and an older design. In fact, Walmart is the only company that Goodyear still supplies private label tires to (they otherwise stopped making private label tires about 10 years ago) since it’s not a very profitable segment.

Even Goodyear’s own Kelly brand might be better than the Vivas.

Caution: incoming rumor/gossip/hearsay.

Supposedly the “Goodyear” tires offered by Walmart exist because of some sort of licensing deal, where the tires are for some reason allowed to use the Goodyear name. They’re produced using God-knows-what kind of rubber compounds and are sold exclusively through Walmart, because they’re not good enough for Goodyear Service Centers to stand behind.

A friend of mine once bought some Goodyear-branded tires from Walmart, and had nothing but trouble with them. (It’s been a while; I can’t remember if the concern was vibrations, or wear, or noise, or what.) Anyway, he went to a Goodyear service center to resolve it, and they told him to “take those tires back to Walmart where you got them from”. He hadn’t told them that they were from Walmart, but they knew. They could tell.

Had Goodyears on both my Crapalier (Assurance?) and my Solstice (Eagle RS-As) from the factory. GM seemed to love using them at one point.

Fucking garbage tires, both of them. Never ever I will buy Goodyear tires with my own money.

You might be able to get something out of the treadwear warranty.

Not sure; 20-30k. If that. This van doesn’t get a heap of miles put on it any more. Good ride. But I’m replacing them.

I am diligent about rotating my tires every 5,000 miles. Grease the front end, inspect the brakes. Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services.

Well, I am not anyone you’d want to put stock in, but that’s exactly what appears to have happened here.

I put a set of those on my daughter’s car and they are noisy and I’ve read that they handle poorly in wet conditions. No more Hankooks for me.

I knew a guy who used to harangue me about buying American. I don’t think there is such a thing as an American-made tire.

I THINK my Generals on my BMW are made in the US, but then the company itself is owned by Continental.

If anything I don’t think all Goodyear tires are made in US anyways, all tire companies have plants all over the world.

Most Michelin tires are, I believe, either made in the US or France. And I think the only ones made in France are the stupid high end tires like the Cup series. I think my first Pilot Super Sports were French, but now they’re all made in the US.

And I think all BFG tires (Michelin tire) are made in the US too.

Begin by spelling it correctly? (Okay, I was a dick.)

I would try to look up the actual data and mileage, as these are likely to be in Walmart’s records, but dealing with the Walmart tire shop is an ordeal under the best circumstances.

The only Goodyears I recommend at work are some truck ones. Living in Akron I know people who work or have worked for almost every tire company that was here and some of the new ones from Asia now have testing facilities here. My personal shift in tire likes have lately been to Falken, Firestone, Pirelli, BFG, Uniroyal, Sumitomo, General or Continental. There are some stand outs in all those brands but you still need to do your homework. An example is some of Falkens cheap tires are dangerous but they and parent Sumitomo make a good tire the ZE950 and HTR A/S P02 which are also sold under two other brandings. Tirerack reps helped with a winter tire review in a magazine a couple of years ago and recommend either as one of them as a great A/S for snow. I put them on our Edge and they seem to outperform the Michelins that were OE. I’m betting we get 45-50k+ out of them. If you search there are some real good bang for your buck models out there. I have Pirelli Centurato P7 plus on my car in summer, switch to Continentals EWC snows for winter. When I replace the Conti which is discontinued I’ll probably get General Altimax Artics.

I live in the SF Bay Area and the demands on tires are much less great. Heck; it’s not even hot.

There’s enough tread on these Goodyears that I’ll keep them and sell them. I can probably get $80 for the set and I won’t have to pay for disposal. They’re not unserviceable, just marginal. Getting less sketchy in my old age, I guess.
