twas interesting how the faster bullets broke the lead rather than deforming it.

this guy has a fun life.

What is the purpose of the .500 Mag? Is it a hunting round, or just a backup if you miss with the rifle?

Basically it’s a defensive bear gun.

It’s designed for people that exclusively hunt with a pistol. The guns are much heavier than what you would wants as a backup.

I also know someone that works as a fishing guide in Alaska and he carries a .454 Casull which is not quite as powerful but still packs plenty of punch for protection from bears. Thankfully he hasn’t had to use it for that purpose yet.

Thanks. Many moons ago I had a .44 Dan Wesson with 8" vented heavy barrel. I called it a hand cannon, although most times I shot .44 Spc to not beat myself up. I can see how the recoil on this would be punishing.

That’s the nice thing with the .454 Casull as well. You can use .45 Colt and even .45 Schofield in them to save your hands a bit. The .460 S&W that came out around the same time as the .500 can use .454 Casull, .45 Colt, and .45Schofield.

What is the purpose of the .500 Mag?

Basically S&W wanted to tell IMI/Magnum Research what’s up.

I’ve had a Taraus .454 Casull and have an S&W .500mag. The .454 kicked; the .500 pushes and twists. Biggest bullets I used in the .454 were 385 grain. 10 shots at the range and I was done. I regularly shoot 20 440 grain rounds outta the .500 and I’m fine. Both guns are/were the long ~10" barrels but the grips were very different.

I’ve shot the Ruger .500, once. My hands are so big the back of the trigger guard touched my fingers. I shoulda known better than to try but... When it when off, blood splattered. Nothing broke but that hurt!

Yes, these guns are only for hunting. They’re way too slow and cumbersome for defense. And, that big bang sure is good fer showin’ off down at the range.

Interesting, but not surprising. Too energetic for the lead to deform; it just snaps. Like when you pull bubble gum rapidly, it’ll just break.

Does he have one with a 17-inch barrel, or something more convenient like 4-inch? My cousin has a Ruger Super Alaskan in .454 Casull and it’s about my favorite wheel gun ever.

Bear repellant? I think it’s kind of ridiculous.

He has the Ruger Super Alaskan. I know before that he had a longer barrel Ruger in .44mag but he wanted something smaller so he could stop using a chest holster. I don’t know if that was a redhawk or blackhawk though.
