Is the Mazda5 the only good car?
Some say yes.
They are probably right.

They are nice little cars. Hot tip is to find a late model 6 speed.

That’s what mine has! I only had two requirements when I bought my last car, that it had to be a box on wheels and it had to have a manual. This car fit the bill and I’ll never get rid of it.

I’ve had VWs, BMWs, a Benz and a Porsche, yet this is the car I want to keep forever. With the 6MT it’s both fun and practical. I’ll probably need to move to Canada or the UK should I need to buy a replacement (since I can’t speak Japanese...)

Correction: Mazdas that are ever taken near any sort of wetness or salt have major rust problems.

We’re friends with a couple that both drive stick shift Mazda5s. One first gen and one second gen. They have 4 kids, and the husband insists on stick shift because he thinks automatics will break and the 5 is the only stick shift 6-seat car. Well, in the US.

I remember that article well. It was amazing how challenging that project was. You’d think it would be a simple bolt-in job, but modern computers make this a bigger challenge than it should be.

My wife drives one that’s getting long in the tooth. I’ve been trying to find something else to replace it with and it’s tough. My wife demands a 3rd row, but nearly everything with one is too big. The closest new vehicle is the transit connect wagon, but even that is a lot bigger.
I have pretty much decided that I will keep on the lookout for a low mileage grand-touring 5 in red or blue (all she cares about is the color) as the replacement.

Lost any trust in Mazda, after being owning one, and being told many times “we fixed the rust problems”
Rust showed up under the rust proofing in less than a year of owning my 2003 protege5. They repainted mine 3-4 times in the first 2 years.

Oh boy, you have no idea how many times I heard that from Mazda in the last 15 years.
Rust is always an issue with Mazda.
I had a Rustege5 till 2010. When I bought it it was a 2003 protege5 but got its name in 2004-2005.

Thankfully we don’t get too much snow in STL. And if I move again it will probably be back to SoCal where rust really wouldn’t be an issue (although I have no explanation as to why the edges of the trunk rotted out on my E21 that spent it’s entire life in SoCal...)

Oddly enough, I haven’t seen any rust issues with the 07+ cars yet in Ontario. I heard they changed steel suppliers in 06, maybe that has something to do with it?
