...and I hope whoever thought it was a good idea and implemented it step on pile of Legos, bare foot.
Clicking a reply notification, this is all you got. You need to scroll BACK to the top, click that damn button then it’ll show you a pile of comments, and you won’t know which one you were directed to. Or if you try to reply to a comment, typed up everything and want to click Submit, only to find out that button’s damn wall hid the Submit button.
Seriously, do they even give 5 seconds worth of thought in usability?
UPDATE (6/23) : It was gone for a while, but it’s fucking back.

They seem to have an obsession with hiding comments. I’m not sure if they think it will make the page load faster or what. The one thing it surely does is piss off their readers.

It’s not page load time (they’re loading anyway, as far as I can tell), it’s that they want to get rid of comments entirely (at least Nick Denton did, with this, I’m guessing the current management does too), without losing the reader engagement that comments provide.

If you don’t “show more comments” before writing a repluy and go over the limit, you have to back most if it out because it also hides the “show more comments” button.

Not even, if you are replying to someone with a marginally longer comment, or comment of a comment, you suffer the same fate.

Definitely has nothing to do with load times, it loads everything anyways, as evident ALL the comments load in an instant moment you click the button. It’s prefetching in the background.

The notification link didn’t even let me see your comment. I had to “show more comments” to see it.
It’s this constant format changes is what is keeping people away.
First, they stopped using the comment text with the notification URL, which made me stop caring what people are recommending.
Then the scrolling stories keep us from reading comments.
Now you can’t even comment or read replies without having to expand the story
I’ve just about had it myself.

Yep, that’s a nasty one.
I’m glad I have wood floors and no kids. That’s not to say there’s not a ridiculous amount of Lego in the house. There is. However, nobody is leaving it out to step on in the middle of the night.

The comments are the whole point of the website. Get rid of the comments and you’ll get rid of the readers.

The no way to default to show pending... The - when you run out of ‘show more’ you get show only OPs discussions and then it sends you all the way back to the top and rehides everything... It’s been at least a decade since this platform had its shit together.

As of today, in order to show comments on a Kinja site, you need to:
- click Show More Comments
- click Load More Comments
- click All Replies
- click Show Pending
- click Show More Replies In This Thread
Otherwise all you see is a stupid fucking Taboola “Recommended Posts” block.
Next I think they should start cropping actual article text so you need to expand those too, and then they can just put ads, make you click them before it’ll show you the text. Remember those “warez topsitez” pages? We’re running in the 90s.

Wonder if ‘they’ are counting a click on ‘more comments’ as a new (or another) page view.
This would allow them to inflate their views for the advertisers.
