I was going to get a new set of shoes before our long drive next month, I just hadn’t planned on doing it today. So now I’m sitting at Costco and smoking a cigar while I wait. So it’s not the end of the world. I also made my 14yo son change half the tire at the airport. Never pass up a teaching moment.

Pretty much. I ran over a pile of roofing staples the day before we left. Should have inspected the tire. Oh well. I made my son help me change it, and I was going to get new tires before our long drive next month anyway. Just not today.

What was the total damage at Costco?

$530 and about 2.5 hours. That’s with my $100 off. Basically, the tire guy quoted me a price, we went out and confirmed the tires were right, but then he said at cash out that the quote was only good if I used a Costco Visa card. I said no, I want to pay the price you quoted me. Tire manager applied a $70 coupon instead, said that’s all he could do. So I went inside and talked to a Costco manager. He gave me $30 cash.

Apparently. I had no idea when I walked in.

I just ordered a set of Kumho Solus tires from Amazon that will ship free to my door, for under $300 including tax. Mount & balance at a local tire shop was $60 for the tires I ordered for the Corolla (also Kumho). The tires are for my white van, but I’m not taking super long trips with the family as a primary mode of transport any more and I just need a set of good tires. The Goodyears that are on there now I bought at Walmart and they’ve barely lasted two years. They’ve worn rapidly and the rubber is drying out and checking and cracks are appearing longitudinally in the grooves. Not impressive.
