AMA. I’m at work though so I might not answer promptly.

I picked it up today and tomorrow I’ll be taking it over on the ferry to an upholsterer because -get this- the owner decided they don’t want the DVD players on the back of the front seats. You can’t get an LC without those, so the owner is dropping $5k to have custom seat covers made to delete the screens.

Hows the back seat in it. I was looking at one in a dealership and it looked even tighter than my 100 series is. I was surprised. Also, does it finally have USB audio or at least an AUX input? I’m stuck with a damn cassette aux.

What are your impressions of its in person lines and proportions? Take as deep a dive as you can (underhood/chassis) and tell me what you think of the details you find.

I guess sit in it and tell me if you have leg room? Seemed tight to me and the screens in the back of the front seats didn’t help anything.

You want me to go find a Land Cruiser just to sit in the back seat and tell you how comfortable it is? I’m not driving all the way to a Toyta dealer for that. Find a Toyota dealer yourself.

It doesn’t have the same presence as old LCs. It just looks like an overgrown bedazzled 4Runner.

The interior was nice but the outside didn’t feel as special as you expect a $90k vehicle to be.

Is it ostentatious? I’m going to assume so. If I were rich I’d want just a really well designed house Frank Loyd Wright style. I’ve been on a tour through this house https://www.abdow.org/ He was a student of FLW and built it as his private home/studio. There is a room on the pond where the pond is actually at window level its crazy.

Side note, they’ve released a software fix to improve the issue people were having with the new 8speed and it hunting for the correct gear.

It is worse for them, but 15 years is a very small part of a Land Cruiser’s lifespan if they’re still making them as well as they did 15 years ago. The first owner almost never uses all the fun toys, but they seem to always still function for the second, third, fourth and fifth owners that I see out on the trails

They’re good aren’t they?? A good friend of mine’s mother has one (neurosurgeon, go figure. She actually has it because of the job, if something comes up she absolutely has to be able to get to the hospital, no matter what the sky is doing) that he gets to borrow sometimes when we go skiing, it’s unstoppable in the snow. I got to drive it back from the mountain once when his dumb head got itself a concussion and it drives soo nice on the highway.

It certainly has good, clean lines compared to its Lexus twin...

Having spent a good amount of time in an around both a 100 and 200 series, I think they have comparable presence, both from outside and behind the wheel. I’ve never spent any time with an 80, but I’ve driven a 60 and that beats them both as far as presence goes.

60's are pretty charming. 80s are too in their own way. I was admiring mine today just thinking that it looks so damn proud of itself. I think thats a tough look to pull off without being a dick about it.

Meh. I’m underwhelmed by it. It does not feel like an $84k vehicle. There’s not a single feature or gizmo on it that can’t be found on a car costing half as much. The only thing that could redeem that price tag is if it is absolutely astronomical off road but I was unable to test that.

There’s features missing too. At that price point you expect to see things like power adjustable headrests and standard adjustable suspension. I counted something like 8 blank buttons. An $84k car should have none.

I loved the 60 I drove but the 2nd-gen 4Runner I ended up with just fit my budget better, I feel like the 4Runner gets look right too. It looks tough without being obnoxious.

06/13/2017 at 17:22, STARS: 0

Blank buttons for what? I’m pretty sure the Land Cruiser has no options, what you get is what you get. Are you sure they aren’t intended as aux buttons for off-road accessories?

From what I’ve heard and read they are astronomical off road. You get a lot more in exchange for the money than you get in a car costing half the price(say, a BMW 3-Series) than what meets the eye. They are also built to the absolute highest quality standard. If you want an 80k off-road vehicle with every luxury feature you get a Range Rover. If you want an 80k off-road vehicle that’ll last forever and through anything with just basic maintenance and provides all the basic comforts you really want and need you get a Land Cruiser. It comes down to quality components instead of toys.

The buttons all felt Corolla-spec and there was a rattle in the back. The odo had less than 8k on it. It was not built to a standard befitting its price tag.

06/13/2017 at 17:59, STARS: 0

These haven’t really got the test of time yet but it’s the mechanicals, not the switchgear that are really built to an insanely high standard.

I do find the tailgate rattle concerning, maybe these are running off the name too much.

Kinja'd!!! "If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent" (essextee)
06/13/2017 at 18:04, STARS: 0

If I spend that much dough on a car, the switchgear shouldn’t flex when pressed.

Kinja'd!!! "jasmits" (jasmits)
06/13/2017 at 18:13, STARS: 0

I agree, I just don’t feel like it’s fair to compare it with an entry-level luxury sedan as features go, a 4Runner is a better half-price comparison and IMO a much better value right now if you don’t absolutely need the space. A lot of the money goes to manufacturing mechanical components to a much higher standards which adds up a lot quicker than putting electric motors in the headrest. A Range Rover is a better apples-to-apples comparison, sure it has all the features and interior quality you could ever want but would you risk a 20-year-old Range Rover?

I think part of it is they are charging what they can, if you want 8 seats and real off-road capability a Land Cruiser is pretty much your only new option right now.

Kinja'd!!! "If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent" (essextee)
06/13/2017 at 18:38, STARS: 0

It’swouldn’t compare it to an entry level luxury car if it didn’t feel like an entry level luxury car. When it comes down to hard facts, 90% of LCs will never leave the road, so comparing it to a road vehicle is apt. Most people aren’t buying these for their offroad prowess. The most robust mechanicals in the world don’t matter if the rest of the car feels like a rip-off.

I also found a massive glitch in the navigation system. You can have the instrument panel display the next direction, except when the distance to the next step is >10 miles it misplaces the decimal point. 15 miles on the main screen is displayed as 1.5 miles on the IP and so on.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Once the distance is 9.9 or below it displays correctly

Yeah that’s some bullshit, I don’t think the infotainment systems are where they should be anywhere in the industry.

You’re right about what most owners are actually going to do with them, but they’re still paying for the capability whether or not they’re going to use it. If a buyer has no plans to leave pavement but wants the space and towing capability of the Cruiser what they really want is a Sequoia. Same features minus most of the off-pavement capability, but keeping enough to navigate snow, and more interior space for 20 grand less.
