Kinja'd!!!

Hello everyone, my name is DucST3 and I own an audi 2.0T. First step is admitting it right????

Anyway, the engine in my a4 likes to burn oil, like almost all 2.0 turbo’s VAG made around this time. Something about poor materials used in the piston rings let some oil seep through. So far I’ve only run castrol 0w-40 synthetic and it usually burns about 2-3 quarts between changes (audi claims a quart every 1200 miles is normal.... yeah right.....). However, this last oil change amazon had a deal on 6 quarts of mobil 1 0w-40 for about $25. This go around with mobil 1, I only had to add about 1 and a half quarts between changes. What voodoo magic is going on in my engine???

Changing the oil again with mobil 1 soon to see if the trend continues, stay tuned!

My Subaru outback was buring 1 qt/1000. Subaru put a new engine in the car for free! I have not idea why a different type of oil would burn less or more unless vecosity was significantly different.

Supposedly they are both 0w-40.

I did hear audi doing that same with the older 2.0 (mine), but you have to burning more than a quart every 1200 miles. Mine is pretty bad, but not that bad

I have no idea what magic is in Mobil 1 but I’m a big fan!

Higher quality oil. Cheaper oils break down and stray from their viscosity rating a little faster then better oils. I noticed it with my SV. Castrol dino? 1.5 quarts every oil change. Amsoil metric oil? Nothing.

I need to find me an amsoil dealer around, I had a guy, but moving messed that relationship up

Its voodoo. I’ve used Mobil 1 , Texaco and Castrol synthetic oils in various cars with certain autos liking one brand over the other. My Audi 3.2 uses no oil using Castrol 0w40 between 7k changes with the 3.2 VR6 engine. My old A4 2.8 and 1.8T cars liked Mobil 1 or Rotella better when using 5w40 diesel oil than the call for grades. My daughter had a Nissan Altima that did very well trying the Texaco. One may burn off less or its detergents may loosen rings better, who knows. I’d say you just go with what works best for you.

I was using the Mobile 0w-40 back when it was a BMW LL approved oil. I notoced the same thing as far as oil consumption.

My mini burns a quart every 1k. They blame it on new direct injection engines.

I blame it on the french and their shitty engines.

Wow, I never realized this, my two previous cars never burned a drop, granted they were both naturally aspirated. This is good info to know

FYI manufacturers are required to release datasheets for things like this so you can compare specs.

Interesting. Assuming I’m reading into the values right, the Mobil 1 actually has a lower viscosity than the castrol. I figured it would be the other way around

I would say higher quality. THis is why all the manufacturers started coming out with their own specific recommended oils. (dexos for GM) (htO for honda) (bmw ll-1). A number of the budget brands were able to meet the API spec for the different grades, but manufacturrers noticed they were cutting corners, and just barely meeting spec. I typically use mobil 1. no oil burn, but I’ve found that i get the longest interval with it.

The funny thing is, audi recommends castrol. My inner conspiracy theorist is coming out...

A co worker was going on how he had to add a quart every 1k miles. Rest of us look at as if hes nuts “thats not normal?” “ahh i have to add 1/4 quart every 5k miles.”.

burn the Audi to the ground

our techs have rebuilt so many Audi engines it isn’t funny for burning oil issues
