Kinja'd!!!

The Maserati GranTurismo first came onto the scene ten years ago and despite huge advancements in automotive technology in the years since, Maserati will still sell you a largely-unchanged GranTurismo if you’re a massive idiot.

Look, I get the appeal of the GranTurismo. It’s big, makes a great noise and looks the part, but why anyone would spend upwards of $150,000 on a car that can be had in the used market with near-identical specs for over $100,000 less is beyond me.

Kinja'd!!!

Sure, the Maserati will do 185, but only just, and when compared to anything else in this price range, the old Maser comes up short.

For that kind of money, a Mercedes-AMG GTS would be calling my name. What would you spend your $150,000 on?

This has been in production since 2003.

Yeah, but the current one has only been around since 2011, it’s a second generation model.

The GranTurismo is a single generation model that’s been around, largely unchanged in about a decade.

After watching Doug demuro’s take on Maserati, I’m just not that interested. Ok, they have a potent power plant. Ok, they have a suspension setup that has sporting pretensions. They also have a serious lack in the qc department. Panel gaps, old tech and value proposition that doesn’t equate to sticker price paid. Don’t get me wrong, from 10 feet away they look good from the front. Once i look at them closer I can’t help but see the inadequacies

IIRC, the GranTurismo was supposed to be discontinued in 2014, and then revived in a new form next year. Obviously that plan, along with a bunch of other FCA plans, went down the drain.

Well, at least we’ve got the Giulia. That’s a worthwhile trade off to keep this in production, I’d say.

It’s definitely an aging design, however they do drive quite nicely. That being said, the competition has gotten too good. Nevertheless I see them often in the NYC area.

Narrowly beaten by the Vantage. Largely unchanged aside from a few nips and tucks since 2005.

I see late model ones a bit in tonier Seattle suburbs. They seem to be big among specific new money new arrival demographics.

Aston did at least attempt to keep the Vantage competitive with the addition of the V12 and the GT12 and such later in its life. Also, I think the Vantage is still one of the best looking cars on sale today despite its age.

I’ll tell you why, because it’s freaking awesome. And the customization available is amazing. If you have the coin, you can get the exact car you want to make you smile for as long as you drive it. There are not many cars that I would spend such money on if I won the lottery, because I don’t think it’s generally the responsible thing to do, but this car...this would have me reconsidering that philosophy.

Every cloud has a silver lining though, in this case…

You can pick up one (or an Aston V8 Vantage) for less than a new M2.

Being the prettiest car in their class means they have aged very well, and since they’ve been in production for so long prices have tanked, just don’t buy new and you’ll be good.

The front clip has some of the best styling in a modern car, but this is the kind of car that no enthusiast would want to buy new. The depreciation is horrible and the mix of outdated interior and questionable reliability is unappealing.

Not only do they still build it, it’s the only two-door model on offer.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
