ThinkPad Yoga won't boot from Optical drive

ThinkPad Yoga Type C020 has Windows 10 installed and won’t boot from the optical drive. I think Windows has control of my BIOS settings and won’t let go. I enter BIOS Setup and turn off Secure Boot and tell it to boot Legacy instead of UEFI but by the time it gets past POST or whatever, the BIOS settings revert back to where they were and it won’t boot from the DVD. I’ve also tried restarting from within Windows Restore Settings and telling the machine to boot to the USB drive, but no joy there, either.

I really hate Windows 10 and I want to go back to Windows 7.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried the one time boot menu by pressing F12 while powering on?

make a USB stick with a 7 installer that might be easier to boot off from (and a lot faster to install)

Sounds like the optical drive could be an issue, maybe try a bootable USB? I would also suggest a bios update but that is not for the faint of heart.

What does making a USB stick with a 7 installer look like?

You have a Windows 7 ISO? Grab one, preferably one with slipstreamed updates if you can. And use a nice utility called rufus that will do all the work for you... just make sure you have a 4GB or more spare flash drive

I’ve tried two different O drives. I think I still have some warranty with Lenovo; I’ll give them a call later this week when school is out.

I do not have a Windows 7 ISO, but I do have an installable copy of a Windows 7 DVD (Dell). Slipstream I’ve heard of, but have no idea what it is. What does Rufus do for me?

Rufus will make the bootable USB for you, just point it to a Windows 7 ISO and your flash drive nad then it will do everything for you. You can get a 7 ISO here

Will rufus make the ISO? I couldn’t get past the product key entry on the Windows website. My machine began with 7, which I installed, then I allowed it to upgrade to 10, which let Windows hijack the BIOS and may have rendered my Windows 7 product key obsolete.

I’ll get on the phone with Lenovo tomorrow and see if they will give me any help. I’m still under some warranty with them, I believe.

The issue is that Microsoft doesn’t accept OEM windows keys to get a new ISO. I have an old laptop I would love to put Windows 7 back onto (currently running Ubuntu) but I can’t use the Asus key on the Microsoft site.

No, you have to acquire the ISO yourself

Makes sense. My machine has a product key stored in the BIOS that I hope will activate Windows once I get it reinstalled. I mean, it’s legit and lenovo sent me new discs...

Could I create an ISO from the Dell Windows 7 DVD?

What utility do you use to create ISOs? There are some out there, but when I’m looking at Cnet, I always feel like I risk picking up some strange .

I’m using ImgBurn and Rufus on a Win7x64 computer. My disdain for Windows 10 is deep. It took over the BIOS on my Yoga and I can’t get it back. I realize that their motivation for this is to help protect against malware, but hey: may I please have my computer back?
