As far as I know, the X is really just upgraded Xbox One S hardware, so unless you have a 4K screen, there’s really no need to spend five hundred bucks on a new console.
It was even stated that all hardware for the Xbox One and Xbox One S will be compatible with the X, further solidifying that it’s just an upgraded version and not a completely new console.
I’d say stick with the One S, it’s still got plenty of life left in it (I don’t see Microsoft releasing a completely new Xbox for at least another half a decade, just the X eventually being the main focus as it’s expected that most people will eventually make the switch to 4K).

I assume it’s the project scorpio thing they’ve been working on which as I understand will have no exclusives. It just won’t run in ultra high graphics on older machines.

Saying that it’s relatively useless unless you have a 4k screen isn’t necessarily true. What the console will do is just like any PC it will bump up to the maximum resolution of the display and alter other variables and textures to improve quality. Remember the recent gen of consoles had only a few games that even ran at full 1080. What I am truly curious about is how 4k their “4k” will be.
