I bought an air conditioner. It cost more than my first Tercel.

Allowances can be made. As long as you wait to turn the heat on until at least after October...

Are you far enough away from the water that you need AC? My friend who lives on Grand near the water says it isn’t too bad there, but that’s a unique location.

I bought an AC unit in 2006, great investment. My unit faces south, no trees or shade, and it becomes an oven in the summer. Now I get to sleep at night.

I live in Texas, we run our AC 10-12 months out of the year. However, last year I only had to turn on my heater for 10 days.

Fun story, one weekend during the summer while I was in high school I worked for a neighbor as a HVAC installer. He was paying nearly $20/hr in 2001, it wasn’t even close to worth it. The weekend I worked he needed help because it was getting up to around 110F outside and the attics of these unfinished houses routinely get 30F+ hotter than outside air temperatures, for some reason his normal guys were unavailable and he couldn’t work alone because if he passed out in an attic he would have died.

I had to wear long sleeves and pants due to the fiberglass insulation (pro-tip: to stop the incessant itching following working with fiberglass insulation you have to take a shower alternating between very hot and very cold water, it’s that or death).

I went back to doing yard work and tree removal for a measly $10/per hour and lunches. It was outside and I got to pick out my own, new ax (the guy didn’t want stumps so I had to dig around the base of the dead trees and cut the roots with the ax). Nothing makes you appreciate AC, bit of shade, or even a hot breeze like spending a summer weekend installing HVAC in Texas.

I’m in “east” Everett. It doesn’t cool down much at night.

I believe it. It always seems warmer in the summer in Bellevue compared to Seattle.

You won’t regret your purchase.

I’m just jealous. When it gets real hot, I rig up a cooling system with a box fan and freezer gel packs

Ours just conked out...here in Nebraska not having A/C isn’t an option. Whole Food jokes aside, the new A/C and furnace (which was also old and on its last leg) was about twelve grand, so yeah, climate control is obscenely expensive.

Welcome to the dark side. I have no clue how people lived here without them...

On the upside, we rarely need to use our heater.

It’s western WA. There is a local social stigma against owning anything beyond a fan for cooling. They’re all masochists.

We have had 5 sunny days in the last 9 months. No joke. I think precipitation-free days are only about twice that.

Also, the cost of living is worse than major cities in SoCal at this point (I’m not kidding).

My house is heated by a heat pump thingamajig so it heats in the cold and colds in the heat...but it’s been so in-between and mildly warm the past week or two it’s just been off all the time with some windows open at night when it’s been warm. I foresee a warm summer though—I think you’ll be happy to have a/c.

That has to be rough on both accounts. I am from Mississippi and although I complain about the heat at least I can escape it but still experience sunshine in brief increments when I want to. I make enough to live like a rockstar in Mississippi but moving to Seattle would have required adjustments we were not yet willing to make. I still daydream about living there, however.

I like it, but I’m surrounded by people that hate it, so I kind of suffer because there are millions of depressed people around me.

Seattle is now the “cheap” San Francisco. Housing is about 10% cheaper here at this point. The tech workers are a little older and more interested in work-life balance, so startups are rarer and a bit weirder.

I like the recreation opportunities and always traveled either here or to a similar latitude when I went on vacations, so I figured I should live where I vacation.

I guess I will be relegated to just visiting the Seattle area. We own a 2100sqft house with a three (okay 2.75) car garage on an acre of land on a private lake in a gated community, but I couldn’t sell it for enough to even buy 600sqft house in a modest-or-less neighborhood in Seattle. Or probably anywhere else in the PNW.

That said, the cost of living here is the cheapest in the nation so as long as the casual racism and homophobia and general lack of education doesn’t bother you it’s dandy.

I went with the “portable” AC unit Costco was selling.. 450 sq ft (remember: very small house). Didn’t want a window unit because Everett and certainly couldn’t afford a heat pump.

https://www.costco.com/De’Longhi-Pinguino-12%2c500-BTU-4-in-1-All-Season-Portable-Air-Conditioner%2c-Heater%2c-Dehumidifier%2c-Fan.product.100340310.html

Reviews are very hot and cold (heh. heh). I’m prepared to return it if it’s not good, but I figure it’ll be good enough for those few days out of the year.

Sam’s Club apparently sells one with good reviews for about half the price, but I’m not a Sam’s Club member, and something something something Wal Mart something something.
