I rented one for a weekend a couple of years ago. Nice for around town, but longer rides might be an issue. Plus the gas tank is a bit small.

I don’t know that this is a good first motorcycle. There are a lot of stories about the guys who always wanted a motorcycle and got a Harley, and now they are dead.

All I can say is riding a bike is hard. I would get something used that’s easy to ride. Not too fast, not too heavy.

It’s like guy who always wanted to go racing so he bought a Corvette. Think twice before being that guy. How about a Honda Shadow 600 twin?

I don’t think it’s a good first bike, it’s pretty...but you may end up riding in a crowd that rides more standards/sport/sport tourers etc. and you’ll have issues keeping up (happened yesterday with a guy new to our group and riding)

Something with a more upright seating position would be more beneficial to you. Offering better control and performance for avoiding trouble. Plus, HD’s shake too much in my opinion. If I wanted a small cruiser I’d get a Yamaha Bolt. Less money, same bike.

What about a cafe racer? I hear they make great first bikes.

And the Bolt is quicker, while likely being MUCH more reliable.

Yamaha is ranked #1 overall in reliability.

This is an 883 Sportster, it ain’t fast. well, as least as far as bikes go. it’s not like he’s getting a Gixxer or CBR1000RR for his first ride. (n.b a great many of people who die riding a Harley weren’t wearing a helmet and/or had been drinking.)

but yeah, I don’t think I’d recommend it for a first bike. It’s heavy and expensive to buy new; I’d much more strongly recommend getting something lightly used for your first wheels. If OP insists on a new bike, a Honda Rebel 500 might be a better option.

the last thing a new rider should be concerned with is how fast their first bike is.

edit: that is, above a bare minimum. Even though it’s what I did, one doesn’t necessarily need to start as small as the “mini-cruisers” like the V-Star 250 or old Honda Rebel.

It’s like .2 to 60 quicker, while being a lot more reliable.

it’s like people think H-D is still building 1974 Shovelheads or something...

just as with cars, the spread in reliability rankings has narrowed considerably in modern times. Yamaha makes great bikes (I’ve owned two myself) but Harley isn’t exactly shoveling out the bodged-together, oil dripping junk they were in the AMF days.

Two points of personal experience. I raced sports cars for about 7 years before getting a bike, and nothing in racing prepared me for the 270 degree sensory input of a bike.

Second, my aunt and uncle were visiting friends out at their farm and she just loved riding bike. The friend had a big touring harley so the guy tossed him the keys. Sadly, 2 1/2 miles down the road there was an open 90 degree turn that you can easily take at 55 mph in a car. There might have been gravel on the road, whatever he didn’t make it and it killed her. Just one of those mistakes that might not have happened on a smaller less top heavy bike.

It’s a lot easier to start smaller and when you got it figured out move to the bigger class. Hence think about getting something easy to ride to give you a chance to get your wheels under you before getting something more difficult to ride.

to be fair, a big Harley dresser is pretty close to 900 lbs in running order. The Iron 883 is about 550.

You should totally get one! And I can totally relate to your desire to get that bike. I had a Sportster 48 1200 for a year. Loved it for a few weeks. Then did a few runs out of town. I had to work that bike to keep up. I was uncomfortable after an hour, sore after two, in pain and exhausted after three. And then I would be extremely lucky to get 100 miles of range. That bike was a hell of a fashion accessory, even many Harley haters liked it, but not very good at being a bike. If you like the cruiser style, I’d suggest a rebel 500, shadow, bolt, or better yet a scout sixty. If it doesn’t have to be a cruiser, get an fz07, 390 duke, or g310r. Maybe even a moto guzzi v7/9.

If you have any more questions about my Harley experience, please feel free to ask. And don’t think I’m just naturally anti-Harley, I grew up with them and loved them and lusted after them my whole life. They have their place. But for what you get and the price you pay, especially for an 883, you’re going to be left wanting.

The best suggestion I have to make, get your endorsement and test ride everything you can before dropping cash.

On another note: do you like the ISO grips? I keep thinking about it, but havent pulled the trigger. Are they as comfortable as they claim? My stockers aren’t bad (Honda VTX), but I get a lot of soreness after the fact.
