My dad traveled over there on business a few times in 1991-92 just after the iron curtain fell. Can confirm. In spades. Company-paid meals for 4 at mid-range hotels were like a month’s salary for a local worker.

Worse. Gays aren’t being rounded up and shipped off to concentration camps here in the US.
And even though some legislation has gotten some traction here, homophobic and transphobic legislation is NOT popular here, nor is it the law of the (entire) land here like it is there.
The US has its (huge) problems, but we are still significantly better off than Russia.
