Looks like a high lift Jack would come in really handy about now.

You know what 4x4 could have handled that trail? A horse!

This incident aside. How do you like your 1gen xterra? I think I have made up my mind on buying a 2003 as a DD.

What kind of recovery gear do you have with you? If you have a static strap you can turn it into a winch.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Just have to be careful when you’re doing it.

Edit: Also what PSI are your tires currently at? You should air down for better traction, probably drop to around 20psi.

Hang on a second.... Are those like magnetic screens so you can sleep in the car without getting bugs? Where can I get some? I’ve been thinking about trying to make a couple for so long, but I didn’t know they were already a thing!

You could totally jam it in there under the tire and drive out.. otherwise good luck using it on those running boards and plastic bumpers..

Or use it as a come-along and you’d still be there..

There is a towing point on a chassis mounted ring.

Good point, I carry mine around but have limited spots until I get some sliders.. I bet boards would have helped in this case..

Also you should come and pull up a stump over here;

It was great fun and incredibly interesting.

Ha, my mom actually made those. We measured the door openings and sewed magnets along the edges.

06/12/2017 at 01:01, STARS: 0

No recovery gear. We were trying to dig the tires out with an ax. Yes, this was poorly planned. Aired down to 30ish. That sand was so soft and there would’ve been nothing to winch against even if I had a strap.

Kinja'd!!! "wanderwebster" (wanderwebster)
06/12/2017 at 01:02, STARS: 0

Haha yea a lot of tools might’ve come in handy, but the most helpful would’ve been another vehicle with a strap. We were there 17+ hrs and nobody except a couple mountain bikers passed by.

Kinja'd!!! "wanderwebster" (wanderwebster)
06/12/2017 at 01:05, STARS: 0

Seriously. 90ish miles into a ~100 mile trail and we get stuck. We were unaware that the trail was washed out 2 miles ahead of us though, so we were fucked anyways because I wouldn’t have had enough gas to get back the long way

Kinja'd!!! "wanderwebster" (wanderwebster)
06/12/2017 at 01:06, STARS: 0

Nobody came by. We got stuck around 5pm on Friday and didn’t see anyone until a couple mountain bikers passed around 7 or 8 the next morning.

The rock under the truck once occupied the space directly behind the truck in the first picture. I must’ve picked a shitty line or something because we came down on it and I guess that chunk broke off. It was definitely not separated when I was approaching. We also didn’t know that the trail was washed out about 2 miles from where we were stuck (end of Hardscrabble) so we were boned anyways because I wouldn’t have had enough gas to go back the long way.

Yea, we got it out this morning. Had to take the long way in because the trail was washed out near the end (2 miles ahead of us) so it took 6 hours to ride out and a little longer back because I couldn’t keep up with the tow guy haha.

06/12/2017 at 01:19, STARS: 0

It’s been good to me so far. I’ve had a few issues but not sure if those are from neglect or just things that failed. Big enough for me to sleep in the back, it’s been my camping rig, beach truck and DD. It was one of the only things I could find in my price range when I bought it with 3 pedals and 4x4.

Kinja'd!!! "wanderwebster" (wanderwebster)
06/12/2017 at 01:21, STARS: 0

Also, this incident had nothing to do with the truck and everything to do with a poor line, lack of tools (preparation) and bad luck. But probably mostly the first two haha

06/12/2017 at 01:25, STARS: 0

My cousin was an hour ahead of us on a DRZ-400 but other than that, no. He wouldn’t have been able to help much anyways. We were expecting plenty of people to pass by but didn’t realize the trail was washed out 2 miles ahead of us so most probably turned around before getting to us.

Ouch. You had no recovery gear with you?

One of the first rules of off roading, be prepared.

Remember the P’s.

Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

06/12/2017 at 06:24, STARS: 1

Ah, well lesson learned then.

30ish is still too high for sand, you want to be around 15-20 psi normally (on non beed lock wheels).

Kinja'd!!!

In a pinch, you can bury your spare wheel and use it as an anchor.

I figured . Been interested in the SC 4X4. Im not into offroading, but I see the appeal. Any words of wisdom when picking up an early model?

Kinja'd!!! "wanderwebster" (wanderwebster)
06/14/2017 at 12:16, STARS: 0

Not really haha. They weren’t even on my radar when I came across mine. If I remember correctly the SC doesn’t add a whole lot of punch, but anything would probably help lol it’s not exactly what you’d call “quick.” I know the auto trans issues were on the next gen. I’ve had to do valve cover gaskets, cooling system (might’ve been from my accident), and now the rear main seal slowly leaks but I’m not sure if those are common issues. I have ~116k on mine.

The SC ones aren’t really worth it over the NA 3.3, plus you get the added cost of premium fuel. The usual concern for timing belt maintenance over 100k applies to these, and if it’s in a salty winter area do yourself a favor and replace the negative battery cable when you get it. Scope out the radiator support too since those rust like crazy up north. If you can swing it, the 2nd gen is superior all around (though be wary of the automatics if that’s what you want for a trans) I’ve owned both generations and overall they are phenomenal value for what you pay vs a Toyota.

06/15/2017 at 19:44, STARS: 0

You are right the SC doesnt really give you a lot if extra get up. Truth be told a shop I have been going to to years has one they are kind of hold for me. Its has a jasper engine and a remaned SC. I have heard a few things about the second gens. Since you have owned both what do you like and what do you dislike about the second gens?

Kinja'd!!! "Eberle-Hills-Cop" (Eberle-Hills-Cop)
06/16/2017 at 08:05, STARS: 1

The 4.0 in the 2nd gen has a solid amount of torque (especially compared to the 1st gen 3.3) so that has been a definite pro. Plus I personally like the added security blanket of having a timing chain and not a belt. 2nd gen’s on-road manners are much smoother than the 1st too. There isn’t much I don’t like about it. Maybe the fact that changing spark plugs can be a pain in the ass, and the factory leaf springs don’t seem to be able to handle much cargo weight. (upgrades solve this though)
