Found this fella trying to cross a fairly busy street while out for a ride. He ducked in when I took his pic. I pushed him to the grass. Hope he took the hint.

Turtles swim. Tortoises trundle.

Yeah, but I can’t help myself from calling it a turtle.

Turtle, tortise. Simply matter of precision. Looks like this fellow is slow enough for the moss to grow on his back. Could well be a preggers female looking for a spot to bury her eggs.

FWIW, we have a lot of them (see, lack of precision covers all of them shelled critters) crossing the roads around here. I stop for as many as I see alive. Always, take them to the side of the road they are facing. I’ve watched some I’ve put behind actually climb back up and try to cross the road again. Like the chicken they want to get to the other side.

That’s funny about crossing the road. Determined little critters, aren’t they?

I was driving in town one day near the town park that has a pond and saw a very tiny thing moving in the road...quickly realized it was a very tiny baby tortoise and jumped out, picked him up and moved him into the woods where I knew a nice stream was.

Super crappy pic (taken with my old flip-phone and I was on my way to work, so in a hurry!), but that’s him on the rock! He fit in the palm of my hand for size reference!

Oh geez, that is a cute lil feller. But beware, that some of them can snap off a finger and have long flexible necks. Never studied turtle/tortise types, though. Just empirical practice. I always only pick them up after they have fully retracted into their shells. Thump the shell with a few fingers if I have to to get them to retract. Then pick ‘em up with a hand on each side between the legs with a light touch. If a head pokes out, I drop ’em there! and begin again. Screw traffic; cars can wait.

Oh, the little guy I picked up was so small he couldn’t have done any real damage, but I picked him up between my thumb and index finger (one on each side) in the middle of his front and back legs and carried him over to the stream quickly. He was all retracted and scared until I got him there and sat him down, so all was well! :)

Thank you to everyone who’s helped these little guys

They’re supposed to be pretty intelligent, as reptiles go :)
