Kinja'd!!!

Both inside rear pads wore like the pad on the right, (this is from the driver side rear, so front of car is at the top pf the image) both rear brakes have freely moving pistons and calipers, so what give with this mess? For the record, the pad on the other side had the metal backing severely bent, but I neglected to get a good image, this has some bending, but not as bad as the other side.

Maybe the slides weren’t greased very well, and one was hanging up?

I had the same thing happen to my old TDI. The slider was frozen so only one pad was wearing. I had to free it up with a torch.

Did you know brake fluid is flammable? I didn’t...

Proabably the ears of the pads were too tight to slide on the fat end of the pad. The top end would slide, but the bottom was locked up. When you go to replace them, of course clean all the pins and slides, hit them with a little 500 grit of so to make sure they are clean. Then if the caliper bracket has replaceable hardware slides, make sure you clean out the channels really well before installing the new hardware. Then make sure once you reassemble that the pads will actually slide in and out on the slides. Then once the caliper is on, make sure it is sliding on the pins. I’ve had to take a file to the caliper bracket to get them cleaned out, and I’ve also short cutted that by filing down the ears on the brake pad so they would slide, but that’s the last resort. But the pads have to be able to move in towards the rotors and back out to work properly, or you end up with what you have in your hands. Good luck.

I learned about the flammability of brake fluid when I noticed my hand was on fire while fighting a stuck bleeder with a pen torch...
