Is what the salesman said to me the first time I ever drove an E9X M3. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Later that salesman tossed me the keys to an E90 M3 and told me to “have fun.” I almost bought that car.

Yes. First time driving an F80 M3 DCT. They not only encouraged me to go WOT on the highway, they directed me to a back road to an office complex that had some surprisingly nice curves. Drove up and down the road a little too fast multiple times (complex was long ago closed and abandoned and I drove it twice prior to pushing it).

Oh, my favorite experience was being handed the keys to a Z06 and told to bring it back in one piece. But I was already very familiar with the staff, having purchased my existing Z06 from them in the past.

Not from a salesmen, but I’ve been that salesman.

Infact one time I had a lady looking at a V6 Chrysler 200S, the old one that was basically a facelifted Seabring. She asked if it was a fast car. She had been driving an old Supercharged Grand Prix, and she wanted a car at least as quick as that. Well the 3.5 Pentastar makes more power than the old 3.8sc and I could have just told her that, but I said “let’s find out”. She did a decent burn out, and a couple 0-100 pulls.

That was one of two 200s that I sold.

That’s REALLY bad for an M before brake-in is complete. Guy must have been a slimeball or an idiot.

*hands keys to me*

“You know the test drive routes around here, come back whenever.”

It prooooooobably helps that I work there and drive a lot of cars that end up in inventory anyway.

He wasn’t too bright. Only interested in the sale and knew absolutely nothing about the car.

Yes, I had just turned 18 and was looking at an older Mustang GT. Sales guy (he had a mullet, awesome mustache, and snakeskin boots), hands me the keys and told me to go “shred some tires” but be safe.

I was tossed the keys to a barely used ‘04 GTO and told to have at it. That was the car in which I did the single dumbest thing I’ve ever done, hit 136 mph on an interstate. After a brief moment (literally a few seconds) of insanity, my sense of self-preservation kicked back in. I immediately exited the interstate and went and hid on some country back roads.

When I test drove a Camaro the second time around, the salesman told me to open it up on the interstate.

Took a Subaru Outback out for a test drive. It was snowing and mid December. Salesman directed me to a steep icy hill so I could try the hill holder clutch and all wheel drive. Car spun out on the start then slid backwards and I almost hit a tree but I let off the brake and streerd it out of the slide and saved our asses. I bought the car.

Yeah, I got it to maybe 90 because I was thinking both I’m going to own one of these one day so I’ll be able to go fast somewhere besides the middle of Houston, and second if I get caught speeding at 40+ I’m probably going to lose my job because my company was super anal when it came to driving,

That’s somewhat comical. I guess there is always a perspective for “fast.”

When I was just given the keys to the M3 I was pretty amazed. A year or so ago these people wouldn’t have talked to me, now they just gave the keys to an M3 to a 23 year old.

That sounds like the kind of guy that would trust an 18 year old with a mustang GT.

My experiences vary greatly from dealership to dealership.

I’ve been given unattended access to mustangs, camaros, a TBSS, charger srt8, a few corvettes, isf, c63, 135i, and a bunch more now that I think about it.

But then I had a Ford dealership completely deny me access to a used GT500. No test drive allowed. The Porsche dealer wanted my insurance card to check out a new boxster S, and carmax has been a completely mixed bag. Went specifically to test drive an E90 M3 DCT and I mentioned to the salesman that I wanted to wait for the car to warm up before we went WOT. “We’re not going to be driving the car hard today.” Shut off the car, stepped out, and went inside to get somebody else.

It does seem to come down to the dealer. I showed up in a rental corolla and got handed the keys to a 2017 C300 and an E class coupe.

Shut off the car, stepped out, and went inside to get somebody else.

That sounds like a pretty great way to go about a test drive. Also sounds like you’ve got the money to actually buy the car, so they should probably be trying harder to get you to buy the car.

Problem is I’m super indecisive. In the past year I’ve seriously considered a CTS V-sport, Q50 red sport, E550, 550i, and more. Wanted a sedan to replace my Z06 because my dog hates the car.

Now I’m on the verge of settling on a TRD 4runner, but no dealers around here want to work with me to get what I want (color and options).

You were smarter than I was for those few seconds. I’m glad I came to my senses before I got arrested, killed, or killed someone else. That was over 11 years ago, and I haven’t driven triple digits since.

A local Cadillac dealer once paid me $100 to take a CTS-V to 120 on the highway.

When I tested a 2016 STI this weekend, the salesman said the same to me, but he did remind me that any ticket I received was my own :).
