Can dealerships outside of California work on them? I am highly tempted to buy one and ship it to where I live.

I don’t see why not. The Fiat cataloging will be avaliable at every dealer and they can’t expect people to not drive them out of state. So yes I am sure they car. To make sure check with your local Fiat dealer.

But from a dealer side, as long as it is a Fiat of USA vehicle the other dealers can look up parts for them.

With Mercedes hybrids and electrics, they don’t offer certifications to states that don’t sell them, thus those dealers can’t do warranty repairs on them. It’s a safety issue mostly.

As far as I’m aware, they’ll fly a certified electric tech out to do any electric-specific work.

There’s quite a few dealers (both FCA brand and independent) that have used ones available across the country, too.

Also, they sold them in Oregon, too, so those dealers should have certified techs.

Not *any* electric-specific work. They’re not too happy about having to fly technicians around the country at their expense, so they limit it to warranty and recall work. I suppose if you were desperate, you could foot the bill to fly a technician out.

Fortunately for us east coast 500e owners, more dealerships around the country are starting to sell them. Many of these dealers are also going the extra step to send one of their technicians to Fiat EV training so that they can also provide service and support. Without this training, they aren’t allowed to work on the 500e’s high voltage equipment.

Note that any dealer or independent shop can work on the car’s non-HV equipment. Brakes, suspension and interior components can all be serviced by anyone. There are also lots of independent hybrid specialists around the country who are qualified to work on an electric vehicle, as hybrids and EVs share many of the same components.

My husband and I are in Virginia and bought one from a Pennsylvania dealer at the end of March and love it. We’re averaging over 1,000 miles per month and we’re getting about 4.5 miles per kWh mixed. Cost to drive is under 3 cents per mile, which is less than half of the cost to drive our 45 MPG TDI cars.

Ah, fair enough.
